Game Freak dev believes Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire will change the gen VI battle environment | Nintendo Everything

In this bit of news, Pokemon designer Shigeki Morimoto gave a bit of hint that both remakes will "offer a change in the generation VI battle environment". This comment was first mentioned by Serebii in NeoGAF, if you are wondering.

So, what does this entails?

The thing with changing the battle environment could mean a lot of things. For one, it could mean more Mega Evolutions, and that means you have more Pokemon, which means the environment is altered in a way that makes their presence important to consider. Say for example, a Mega Sceptile or Mega Swampert could do new things that would make previous threats worry about them, like Mega Gyarados. Maybe there will be some Mega Evolutions that do new things as well.

Another possibility in the change of battle environment is new tutors that will change the way battles are conducted. Say for example, Aura Sphere is a tutor, and is given to lots of Psychics and Ghosts. Now this will give some trouble to some certain Dark-types or Steel-types since they are weak to it. Or maybe, Powder becomes more common, so Fire attacks aren't as readily used on a whim.

Perhaps there could be a move given to a Pokemon with potential that would provide a huge change. Consider Scizor, an old Pokemon that was given Bullet Punch, which changed its fortunes for the better and made the way battles are conducted around it to some extent, giving something to worry about for something Steel-weak, despite being faster.

So what could this bit of message mean?

Thanks for reading.

Move Tutors (outside the first entries of a generation) are a staple at this point, so I hardly think that this is the main thing he had in mind.

I hope that this doesn't just boil down to new Mega Evolutions. I think that some Pokémon would be better off with exclusive held items rather than Mega Stones. Not every Pokémon has to undergo a design change just to get better in battle, and the one Mega Stone limit is pretty restricting.

I also don't see why there shouldn't be some new moves and possibly even abilities if they're adding new Mega Evolutions (which will require a patch for XY). The time for new species isn't now, though.

This could just about mean anything. Which is the sad part. No real information was given in this letter, it was just to generate hype.

Maybe he's simply trying to say that the battle graphics would be improved (stupid thought). It remains very vague. Teasing with such saying, god why XD

New Megas may be possible, while the idea of the move-tutoring system may be another plausible possibility.

Or, maybe they're going to make Inverse Battles a lot more common

Morimoto was most likely referring to the metagame given the chosen outlet (the Global Link website). There is already a special Inverse Battle season right now.

Sounds to me like there's going to be a change in the rules, maybe type chart too?

Literally anything that introduces new moves into a Pokemon's moveset can affect the metagame. It's probably going to be new Mega Evolutions that shift the power structure in battles--though I doubt anyone is going to push Mega Kangaskhan out as the undisputed queen of Wifi battles.

Maybe the Battle Frontier will now have an online component.

Mega Sunflora, behind that smile lies the most powerful Pokemon the world has seen.

That is all.

Environment > Weather > New Groudon & Kyogre forms have Infinite Drizzle and Infinite Drought. Bringing back weather wars.

So here's what I think it could mean:

-The battle graphics are changed a bit
-New Mega evos
-Pokemon getting different moves/abilities (for some Pokemon that don't have hidden abilities as of now)
-New move tutors to teach more moves
-The new kinds of battles will occur more often (Inverse, Sky Battles, etc.)

"Change in the Environment"

Well duh, Drizzle and Drought.

I think it will be on a much larger scale than this, although the thing that isn't clear to me is do they mean battles in general, or just for pvp?

If it's the latter, then it's also the former (albeit possibly to a lesser extent). The fact that the letter was posted on the Global Link website strongly implies that Morimoto was referring to the metagame.

Hopefully that means we're getting more mega evos, preferably with unique and new abilities.

Maybe Pokémon can launch attacks on the same time 0_0
Like we have seen in the anime: two hyper beams clashing in to each other followed by an explosion!

Edit: As in, wait until E3 or CoroCoro before jumping to conclusions. The "battle environment" never changes mid-gen, other than the typical Move Tutors and new formes (or in this case, Mega Evolutions). This looks to be right up the same alley as billing Hoenn as a "brand new world" and your other typical marketing PR.

For the record, I'm expecting Dive Battles as the Hoenn alternative to Sky Battles. Underwater and exclusive to Water-types and similar Pokemon.
