Today, Midway Games confirmed what had been rumored for a while: the first next-generation Mortal Kombat title, up until now called “Mortal Kombat 8″ by the community, is officially titled Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. As the title suggests, it will be a crossover with the characters and setting of DC Comics.

Lots of unanswered questions remain, such as will the game have the signature fatality moves Mortal Kombat fans have grown to love. Details about its gameplay are still unknown, although a past interview with creator Ed Boon revealed that the next installment of Mortal Kombat would be more serious.

It’s going to be a fighting game, definitely, but after that anything can go”, he added, talking about the fact that he’s starting from scratch for the new game.

The game will have more features, take advantage of motion-sensing controllers and “try to introduce as many new characters as possible”.

Initially, talk of a Mortal Kombat/DC Universe pairing had comic and gaming fans writing off the possibility as a far-fetch senseless idea but in light of the news from today, expect a new round of speculation of how good or bad it could be.

I have to say, I was one of the ones who wrote this off as being just a far-flung rumor. But...holy crap. With any luck, this will be as good as the old Marvel vs Capcom series.

This is the stupidest idea ever. Because a follow-up article announced there would be no blood or fatalities in the game. So basically they took the MK characters and reduced them to minor badguys for Batman and Superman to pummel. And I don't even like MK.

Ya never know, it might work. Though without blood or fatalities, you kind of lose the only two real gimmicks MK has to hang onto. I think it'll ultimately depend on which DC characters are picked, which MK characters are picked, how they operate, and what (if any) storyline there is to explain WHY these characters are facing off (REALLY good storyline could save it...theoretically).

Should be interesting to see what develops. Maybe we'll get something at New York Comic-Con (or maybe this is it).

The removal of the fatalaties, whilst not being great from a MK fan perspective, prolly' makes good business sense.

All those DC fans willing to buy, put off by seeing Shang Tsung rip out Wonder Womans spine?

Also, as much as i think they should be an OPTION, i think their removal could contribute to the overall success of the game.

And anyway, its the gameplay and fighting mechanics, and quality of the movesets that matter most in a game liek this right?

Question is, will it be a 2D explosion fest (ala MvC) or a psuedo 3d affair (ala, well, most modern fighters, Tekken, virtua etc)?

This sounds like a good idea and I can't wait for it to come out.

So I started a thread without knowing of this thread's existence.

Anyway.

I am a fan of both MK and DC (well at least Batman, The Sandman Chronicles and V), and I personally really have adopted this game to be a great idea.

Aside from the toning down of blood (it will not be completely gone, Ed Boon has assured us that "There Will be Blood" heh heh), and fatalities (Boon has also has said that they will include a new finishing move system similar to fatalities but again, toned down) I think this game will be a great transition for the series to the next generation. Sure it might end up going the route of Marvel Nemesis, but that is a risk that Ed Boon and the good folks at Midway have earned the right to take.

As far as what the roster will be like, I hope they include some more of the darker DC comics characters. I mean of course they will have the staples like Batman and Superman, possibly Wonder Woman, or Green Lantern. But I would love to see Dream, or maybe even V from V for Vendetta, but the one character I would absolutely be nerdgasmic over would be the Joker. Then again, they might even go all Marvel Nemesis and have people to counter the MK characters, can anyone say Mr. Freeze?

Ha, yeah, well, this is what I have on my mind for now.

anything that lets me beat the shit out of batman as an ice ninja can't be bad

god i hate batman

yes but superman can fly (somehow?)

sadly it's only going to be rated T so no fatalities or masses of blood

i wanted to rip off batmans head with a "GET OVER HERE"

oh well

Well they have said that they are gonna tone down Supermans abilities. So I'm guessing that the whole flying thing will be out.

I so wish they had kept fatalities. One of Batman's should have been throwing an exploding batarang into their chest. I would have been the happiest camper alive.

I was thinking a lot about this game the other day and the roster and everything. In interviews Ed Boon has said that he wants to get back to the roots of the series. So my theory in this case is that the team at Midway is gonna put the characters from the first or second MK game. It makes sense, these are the well established characters in the MK universe, just like Batman and Superman are key icons in the DC universe.

If this ends up being the case then the MK roster might look a little like this:

Johnny Cage
Kano
Liu Kang
Raiden
Sub-Zero
Shang Tsung
Scorpion
Sonya Blade

That is the cast from the first game. The people from MKII that would be my first picks to fill the 11 spots:

Jax
Kitana
Mileena
Shao Kahn

Then again I could end up being very far away from the reality.
