What title says.

Again, like, say those theories of getting Luigi in SM64, Waluigi in SM64DS, playing SMG on your DS, etc, etc.

Mine is the one for playing SMG on your DS.

Back in the days of Gen 1, all sorts of Pokemon rumors and theories popped up. Back then, there were no sites like Serebii and Bulbagarden to look up Pokemon information, instead people came up with theories and followed them, like Pikablu and the Pokegods rumor for instance.

I think I should also mention Waluigi in SM64DS. And maybe almost a lot of things by GCPM11.

Unlocking Luigi in Super Mario Sunshine, mainly due to people still looking even though its been debunked.

With Luigi being playable in the DS remake, now people are saying that WALUIGI is unlockable.

Play as Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog! He was there the whole time! Just beat the game 5 times in a row!
Sure...

Get all the trophies in Meelee, and after the adventure mode is done with, a secpnd giga bowser battle happebs to obtain him as the final character.

I think I remember seeing something about Golden Armour King for Tekken 3 in a thing called Cheatbook Database I had on an old computer of mine back when I was a little girl... I don't remember the method to supposedly unlock him though, but I think it involved King and Tekken Force Mode.

This is a really predictable answer, but for me it's gotta be "Mew's under the truck!" I wasted so much time...

I know this isn't about a character, but it's basically the same thing.
It's so old, I bet nobody's heard of it (and I can only vaguely remember the details).
There's an 80s arcade game called Battlezone - you drive a tank and shoot other tanks and things - in the background is a volcano.

The theory went like this - that was actually the enemy's headquarters (or their factory). IIRC, you had to get a million points without losing a life and got transported there to battle the enemy leader.

This isn't a theory but I think it deserves a mention since it was a total fake.
Only one I remember now it's Shen Long from Street Fighter II, what a mistranslation caused! If someone doesn't know this was a translation error in Ryu's victory dialogue. Instead of "If you cannot overcome the Rising Dragon Punch, you cannot win!" it was put as "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance." So people started thinking it was a secret character and started or tried all kinds of things.
Then a magazine took it farther printed the supposed requirements to unlock him, which were crazy.
The reporter gave an "Honorable Mention" to "W.A. Stokins" (waste tokens) of "Fuldigen, HA" (fooled again, ha), and claimed that the character could be found if a player using Ryu did not let the character suffer any damage during the entire game, and upon reaching the final match against Bison could neither hit Bison nor let him inflict any damage until the time limit expired, thus ending the round in a draw. After repeating this for ten consecutive rounds Sheng Long would then appear out of nowhere and throw Bison off of the edge screen and out of the way. The game's on-screen timer would then stop at 99 seconds, resulting in a "fight to the death" between Ryu and Sheng Long
You can bet more than one tried this.

I believe that was electronic gaming monthly that did that infamous april fools joke
Another good one are those ways you can "get X legendary on Y game even though X legendary needs to be migrated to get on Y game without migrating!!!"
That or traveling to space to capture deoxys

In Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire you can go to the moon to catch Jirachi if someone at the space port said the right line of text.
In SSBM if you hit all the credits screen targets you unlock Toad
In SSB64 you can unlock Masterhand by circling the hand on the player select screen around a certain number of times
