In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Entrainment is chosen.

Type: Normal (Status)
Base Power: --
Accuracy: --%
PP: 15

The user dances with an odd rhythm that compels the target to mimic it, making the target's Ability the same as the user's.

Our move this week will be Entrainment, introduced in Generation 5. This peculiar move causes the user to transmute their current ability to the target, which has its own uses. For example, certain users have Chlorophyll, which is very good in a Sun team as it will speed them up in Sun too, including Ninetales. On the other hand, some abilities are potentially detrimental to the opponent, such as Klutz.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move?
  • What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • In another language, this move is known as "Befriend". How does befriending a Pokémon cause them to inherit their abilities?
  • Is it possible for this move to affect people too?
  • Compared to the other Pokémon in the list, Durant isn't obviously friendly, yet it learns this move. How is it able to use it? Also, if it transfers Truant to the opponent, how would it be like if the opponent is afflicted with this ability?

Here are the current users of this move:
(Level-up)
  • Plusle & Minun
  • Buneary & Lopunny
  • Chingling & Chimecho
  • Audino
  • Leavanny
  • Petilil & Lilligant
  • Durant

Thanks for reading, and happy discussing!

Next Week's Move Hint: A move that deprives the opponent of their held berry.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move?
Many of the Pokemon appear to have bodies that are made to be able to dance well. There's a movie that showed something similar, where moves are fascinating enough that the opponent becomes entranced and does the same movements. Both are similar circumstances.

What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
For Pokemon that are facing Pokemon with dangerous abilities (that cause status conditions, etc.) it would be helpful to avoid getting a status condition from physical contact alone.

Is it possible for this move to affect people too?
People can become entranced/entrained by the attack, but Klutz I could see as being the only Ability that would occur. The person could become clumsy.

Compared to the other Pokémon in the list, Durant isn't obviously friendly, yet it learns this move. How is it able to use it? Also, if it transfers Truant to the opponent, how would it be like if the opponent is afflicted with this ability?
I don't think trances/entrainment depends on how a Pokemon looks. Durant probably can move in a way that is very entrancing for other Pokemon

Truant would increase the length of a battle if the opponent then has the ability as well. Both Pokemon would have trouble keeping up.
