Move-of-the-Week Discussion #62: Incinerate

In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Incinerate is chosen.

This interesting Generation 5 move might be meant to deter the opponent's berry usage, because once it hits, the berry that the opponent is rendered unusable, ergo becomes wasted in the flames. This move is also a spread move, so it could be used to make sure every opponent isn't hiding any berry surprises, such as a weakness-reducing berry. Interestingly there are so many users, even ones you don't expect to see learn this move. However, upon closer inspection, they have other means to use fiery attacks, save for a few.

Here's the in-game description for this move:

In-game Description (BW) said:
Type: Fire (Special)
Base Power: 30
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 15

The user attacks the target with fire. If the target is holding a Berry, the Berry becomes burnt up and unusable.[/COLOR]

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • Can its effect be moderated so that the berry is cooked rather than being destroyed?
  • As a burning attack, how does Incinerate reach out to the opponent's berries, while the other Fire attacks never seem to burn the berry(s)?
  • Since every user has a different means of unleashing a fire attack, such as punching, biting or just breathing it, does that mean Incinerate matches their method of execution?
  • For the unaware, Harvest doesn't recover berries that have been removed through Incinerate. Why can't it be recovered this way?

Incinerate is probably a smaller, but more controlled and hotter flame that targets the opponent's berry if it has one. It might be able to be controlled so that it can roast a berry rather than burn it if this is the case. Similar to how many Pokemon use Flamethrower in different ways, there's probably no specific way a Pokemon has to use this attack, so it would differ by Pokemon. I've always assumed that Harvest works by rapidly growing the berry seeds from within the body, so if the berry is destroyed, there's no way the seeds can grow.
