In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Present is chosen.

This odd move that was introduced in Generation 2 is a random one. This move was introduced as Delibird's signature move due to its Christmas theme, and as such, it is its only move (other moves are learned through other means). Even though presents are good things to have, this one is more likely to be a bad thing! You don't actually know if it will hurt the target or heal them, which makes it an unreliable move. Unlike other unreliable moves, the worst case scenario is the opponent's best case scenario, since it could heal them too!

Here's the in-game description for this move:

In-game Description (BW) said:
Type: Normal (Physical)
Base Power: Varies
Accuracy: 90%
PP: 15

The user attacks by giving the target a gift with a hidden trap. It restores HP sometimes, however.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • How do its users bring presents out of nowhere?
  • Considering the majority of the learners are fairies, what do fairies have to do with presents?
  • Why do each present contain a random effect?
  • Why is it that the present usually damage the target compared to healing them?
  • Is it possible for the user to check the contents of the present without harming themselves?

Here are the current users of this move:
(Level-up)
  • Delibird

    (Breeding)
  • Happiny, Chansey & Blissey
  • Pichu, Pikachu & Raichu
  • Cleffa, Clefairy & Clefable
  • Igglybuff, Jigglypuff & Wigglytuff
  • Togepi, Togetic & Togekiss
  • Marill & Azumarill
  • Snubbull & Granbull
  • Miltank

    (Event only)
  • Audino

Thanks for reading, and happy discussing!

I think it might be something like this:.

Delibird are known to keep food in their tail-sacks, and give them to lost hikers if they meet one. The lost hikers would be weak from hunger, and thus the food would 'heal' them.
However, Delibird might accidentally give out food gone bad, and thus 'damage' the receiver.
