In Pokemon, there are a lot of different moves used by different Pokémon. However, there are certain moves we don't normally see being used, heard about, or used in a meaningful manner. On the other hand, there are moves we see that are used often, or are just famous. In this type of discussion, we shall discuss the ins-and-outs of the move of the topic, and there will be some base questions that will help you. Every Saturday, a different move will be discussed.

This time, the move we shall be discussing is Worry Seed, a move introduced during Generation 4. Once the target is affected, they will have the ability Insomnia instead of whatever they have now to stimulate the emotion of worry on that Pokemon, unless they happen to have the Sap Sipper, Truant or Multitype ability. Keep in mind that this even works on a Pokémon with Wonder Guard! Through a Move Tutor, this move is widely available to almost every Grass-type, with a few non-Grass-types included.

Here are some possible questions about this move to answer (though you could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move?
  • What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Realistically, would there be any advantage or disadvantage associated with using this move? If yes, what kind of advantage/disadvantage would they have when they use it?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in competitive battling, realistically and in video game terms?

Here are the current users of this move (put in Spoiler since there are so many to list):
  • Bulbasaur, Ivysaur & Venusaur
  • Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume & Bellossom
  • Paras & Parasect
  • Psyduck & Golduck
  • Bellsprout, Weepinbell & Victreebel

I'm guessing they just fire a seed at their target. Like Leech Seed, except I don't think it would wrap itself around them. Although, you'd think that the pokemon/person would have to swallow the seed for the insomnia to take hold (or I would).

Cause their opponent to never fall asleep, thus weakening them from a lack of sleep? It could also neuter other abilities that stop sleeping, so Worry Seed + then Sleep Powder/Spore/Hypnosis could be used to incapacitate them. (derp, my brain stopped working momentarily)

  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?

If it works on humans, the Worry Seed could be used to keep people awake who work during the night such as security guards and other nightshift occupations, I guess

There are quite a few non-Grass-types with this move, actually. Besides Mew, Psyduck and Munna also learns it. How do you think they are able to use them?

How does the move help with casting Sleep? Once they are inflicted with Insomnia, then they are already immune to Sleep.

Thanks for reading.

I'd presume in the same way. Just like when a non-Grass uses Bullet Seed or Seed Bomb.

Yeah, my brain must have cut out for a moment there (especially since I go back to talking about insomnia in my next point xD). Sorry about that. XD

The only competitive use for this move IMO is to remove Wonder Guard. Apart from that, nothing.

Well, I guess in Double Battles you could use it on your partner to prevent it from sleeping.
Besides stopping something like Wonder Guard or Levitate from working, I can't really see any other in-game uses for the move...

While it's true that it helps in keeping others awake after being inflicted with it, you have to remember that the feeling worry can be detrimental. I suppose for humans it is OK if they are more in control, but if they can't, then it's going to be tough because some intricate jobs may be harder to do because that requires a state of being calm to do well. It could also be risky on Pokemon who needs to rely on their abilities.

Keep in mind that there is a Pokemon with Prankster with this ability. That is Whimsicott. It could act as an emergency stop on certain Pokemon who relies on their abilities too much, like Gliscor and Zangoose. I imagine it would be sweet to see Gliscor suddenly losing close to all of its HP all of a sudden.

Thanks for reading.

I think it is better to not have effect on Pokemon that has Vital Spirit
And wake a Pokemon that is sleeping

That's rather interesting actually because it shows what Worry Seed could have been with more thought put into it. Worry Seed making Calm Mind useless, increasing the power of Rage, etc. If a Pokémon is worried it could also take a decline in Happiness and so reduce the power of Return.
