In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week's move is Steel Wing.

One of the first Steel type moves to be introduced, Steel wing provides Flying types with a way to damage the Rock types that resist their Flying moves, and is particularly useful early on in the game. It has fairly average power and doesn't offer the best type coverage which prevents it from being a staple for Flying Pokemon, but for a number Pokemon that lack better options it can still get the job done.

Here's the in-game description for this move:

In-game Description (XY) said:
Type: Steel (Physical)
Base Power: 70
Accuracy: 95%
PP: 25

The target is hit with wings of steel. This may also raise the user's Defense stat.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • How does Steel Wing raise the user's defence?

Next move of the week: A highly disruptive status move

This move caught my attention when I found out that Leavanny, of all Pokemon, learns this move.

I believe that when preparing for Steel Wing, the user's wings become stiff, which has the effect of making it steel-like. Perhaps it's something like warming up, where the user makes their wings stronger to take a hit like you would use your wrist to block some blows. Since the stiffening is just for using this move, it doesn't necessarily raise defence all the time. An interesting application shown in the anime is when Pelipper used it to neuter Electric attacks (it was facing an Electric attacker, so the strategy has some use) by planting one wing in the ground.

I imagine if Steel Wing is used, it allows someone to walk on the bird without straining the wing, which is useful for boarding flights and crossing gaps. Still, every relevant user could fly, so that advantage might be redundant.

Thanks for reading.

OMG this is Steven's favorite move ♥

I looked at the list - and I could not understand one thing:

How can the Dodou family learn this move it doesn't have wings.

It's wings turn to steel, pretty simple ;o

I was never fond of this move, always seemed to miss. Now that it kills fairies, I can see it get more play for Dragons. Can help them with Rock as well I guess.

For killing rock types with birds, I just hit then with a close combat ;o
