winstein: First of all, sorry for the late update for Move-of-the-Week, since I was away and help didn't seem to be there. There's not much I can do to make up for lost time, so it will have to proceed as normal.

In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Drain Punch is chosen.

The chosen HP-draining move is this Generation 4 gem Drain Punch. It wasn't much of a gem back then since it was not strong and has low PP. In Generation 5, Fighting-types flourished, thanks in small part to the upgrade of this move. The valuable combination of coverage and recovery made this a great move for any Pokémon. Punching others to drain their HP must have been an art that requires a bit of mastery since it had this upgrade, much like some other Fighting attacks.

Here's the in-game description for this move:

In-game Description (XY) said:
Type: Fighting (Physical)
Base Power: 75
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 10

An energy-draining punch. The user's HP is restored by half the damage taken by the target.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • What kind of energy is absorbed when the move recovers HP?
  • How is the punch performed to be able to recover the user's HP?
