In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Relic Song is chosen by @Yato;.

Our move today is introduced in Generation 5, which is exclusive to Meloetta. Despite this exclusivity, Meloetta cannot learn it normally. Instead a Move Tutor is necessary to make it learn this move. With this move, Meloetta is able to switch to its faster and rougher Pirouette form, which is great because Pirouette's strengths are immensely useful. It is also unique among Sleep moves in that it does damage AND cast sleep. Since this move affects multiple targets, it could potentially put multiple targets to sleep. Since this move is a sound-based, it bypasses Substitute, making it similar to Sing or Grass Whistle.

Here's the in-game description for this move:

In-game Description (XY) said:
Type: Normal (Special)
Base Power: 75
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 10

The user sings an ancient song and attacks by appealing to the hearts of the listening opposing Pokémon. This may also induce sleep.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • Why can't Meloetta learn this move normally?
  • How is it that Meloetta is able to switch forms when this move is executed?
  • Why can this move cast sleep despite being a somewhat damaging attack?
  • Compared to Sing or Grass Whistle, this is an attack. How is it that the melody of this move do damage?

Here is the current user for this move:

(Move Tutor)
  • Meloetta

Thanks for reading, and happy discussing!

Why can't Meloetta learn this move normally?

Probably the Move Tutor is the one who composed the song. He just wanted to make Meloetta perform it. For maximum effects. In short, Meloetta is just the perfect performer.

Why can this move cast sleep despite being a somewhat damaging attack? OR Compared to Sing or Grass Whistle, this is an attack. How is it that the melody of this move do damage?

(Mostly because I dunno which would be answered) I think that the damage inflicted is not physical, but emotional. As in, the listeners would just cry at how beautiful the piece is and cry a lot or whatever they do when they experience those stuff.

and just in case im not available (although i doubt it because i already won), i choose Work Up.

I think Relic Song is one of those Pokemon moves that is not innate to the Pokemons. I would assume this move only exist within the Unova region and that this song was composed by the musician in the Cafe Sonata exclusively for a Meloetta; who is the only Pokemon powerful enough to transform the song's melody into a powerful energy that can also alter Meloetta's form. So who knows there could be other "songs" that a Meloetta can learn and use the song's melody to alter its form.
