In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Haze & Mist are chosen.

This week, we will be looking at counterpart moves again. Generation 2 introduced a couple of moves known as Black Mist (Haze) and White Mist (Mist), whose common function is to control the stat boosts or reductions incurred. One could say that Haze is polluted while Mist is purified. Quite a few users could learn both, which is interesting because both doesn't seem like they could be compatible with one another.

Here's the in-game description for both moves (both have the same description):

Haze (XY) said:
Type: Ice (Status)
Base Power: --
Accuracy: --%
PP: 30

The user creates a haze that eliminates every stat change among all the Pokémon engaged in battle.

Mist (XY) said:
Type: Ice (Status)
Base Power: --
Accuracy: --%
PP: 30

The user cloaks itself and its allies in a white mist that prevents any of their stats from being lowered for five turns.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • How does Haze reset any stat boosts or reductions?
  • The way Haze functions in the anime is a lot different, since it is a move that causes an opaque fog once used. Is this the proper effect of this move? Does it work the same way as it is supposed to?
  • Why is it that Haze only lasts once before it is gone?
  • Why do a lot less Ice-types learn Haze, as opposed to Mist?
  • How does Mist prevent stat reductions?
  • Being that Mist is purified, what if Mist prevents self-reduction (incurred through Overheat, Superpower and so on) in addition to preventing stat reduction from the opposition?
  • Do both moves have a chilling effect?
  • Would it make sense if both moves incur Fog? Would it be ideal?

How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
Hmmm, Most of them probably use it by releasing cold water molecules from their body. Wheezing would obviously just expel it's smog. I think they would use it the same way an octopus uses it's ink, to hide themselves from enemies, particularly those who try to make themselves stronger (haze) or use status (mist).
How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
Movies, like special effects could use it for sure. Also thieves like team rocket XD
Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
I think Aromatisse and Spritzee could get haze :> They would use their perfume to execute it XD

I think probably any pokemon learning Powder Snow could also use Mist, so Castform and Spheal's evolutionary line could hypothetically also use Mist. It seems like Mist is a by-product of what happens when a pokemon is trying to learn Powder Snow for the first time. Some (Surskit, etc) never move past the Mist stage, though.

I want to assume that in the Pokemon World, haze and mist are more meteorological and environmentally based
moves but the anime and/or manga says otherwise. In anime, haze has very similar mechanic with smokescreen;
only summoning a black thick smoke to cover the area.
I think haze is a gaseous dust and smoke that causes any enhancements and downgrades of Pokemon's abilities to be
eliminated. The gas has an energy that takes away those buffs and debuffs. And prevents from happening for a while
in the area of effect.
Mist works the same way only that it protects the user from a vapor like cloak shielding its body.

Now, I know the reason Zekrom and Reshiram get Haze and Mist respectively is because of their Japanese names (Black Mist and White Mist), but since both are Ice-type moves, I almost wonder if they're what remains of Kyurem in Zekrom and Reshiram after separating from the original dragon...
