NOTICE

From next week onward, we will be going for a new approach in determining the next move. Instead of picking the next move myself, the next move will be determined by the best poster by Friday. If you are deemed the best poster for this topic, you get to choose the next move based on criteria.

In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Lovely Kiss & Sweet Kiss are chosen (since nobody voted, I chose it).

These counterpart moves are known as the Demon's Kiss and Angel's Kiss respectively, but unlike most counterpart moves, they are introduced in different Generations, and the latter even get a re-type. Generation 1 gave us the former, which was an exclusive move for Jynx (and still is, to this day). The latter was introduced in Generation 2, and is more for cuter Pokémon, as the majority of its users are Fairies (Egg Group, not the type). In Generation 2, we even got a bunch of Pokémon with both moves as Event-exclusives, during Valentine's week no less.

Here's the in-game description for this move:

Lovely Kiss (XY) said:
Type: Normal (Status)
Base Power: --
Accuracy: 75%
PP: 10

With a scary face, the user tries to force a kiss on the target. If it succeeds, the target falls asleep.

Sweet Kiss (XY) said:
Type: Fairy (Status)
Base Power: --
Accuracy: 75%
PP: 10

The user kisses the target with a sweet, angelic cuteness that causes confusion.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • How is it possible for a kissing move to inflict confusion or sleep?
  • Why is Jynx the only user of Lovely Kiss? What makes it special compared to other Pokémon?
  • This move's accuracy isn't perfect. Where would the kiss need to target for it to work?
  • Both moves are available to a selection of Pokémon during Valentine's week during events in New York. Would this kind of event with those moves work for other countries?

Here are the current users for Lovely Kiss:
(Level-up)
  • Jynx

    (Breeding)
  • Smoochum (Gen 2) [NOTE: Since Jynx is always female, it cannot pass moves to its offspring.]

    (Event only)

  • Nidoran♂, Nidorino & Nidoking (Gen 2)

  • Bellsprout, Weepinbell & Victreebel (Gen 2)
  • Snorlax (Gen 2)

Here are the current users for Sweet Kiss (put in Spoiler tag due to the large list):

  • Cleffa, Clefairy & Clefable
  • Igglybuff, Jigglypuff & Wigglytuff

Thanks for reading, and happy discussing!

Previous Move-of-the-Weeks:

The user with the best post will receive the right to vote for next week's move on a Friday, as chosen by the mods of this section. The next move is based on criteria, as listed below.

Next Move Criteria: One of Nature Power's attacks

Moves: Swift, Earthquake, Shadow Ball, Rock Slide, Stun Spore, Razor Leaf, Bubble Beam, Surf, Hydro Pump,
Tri Attack, Seed Bomb, Blizzard, Mud Bomb, Ice Beam, Power Gem, Earth Power, Energy Ball, Moonblast

How is it possible for a kissing move to inflict confusion or sleep?

IT is kind of true in real life:

Confusion: When you are kissed by a random person in a random place and in a random time, you are most probably react with, "Wait, what?" and probably get confused.

Sleep: True love's kiss. When you get it, you feel some kind of ethereal feeling. Close to daydreaming. And then to dreaming. Finally to sleep.

This move's accuracy isn't perfect. Where would the kiss need to target for it to work?

Probably, the person is just kinesthetic (unstable in movement) and is evading the kiss. Also, the kiss must be somewhere in the face. Lips, cheeks, forehead.

[on an unrelated note, i quite dont understand the mechanics for the choosing of next weeks move]

The way the next move is chosen, at the end of the week, which is Friday, the best poster will be able to choose the move (you will be informed). If you are the only poster by Friday (or have the best reply by that time), you get to choose the next move from the criteria I listed. Hopefully my explanation is clear.

In case nobody else is going to post in this thread, maybe you could suggest the move you want? That way, in case you are not available on Friday, I could prepare the next move soon.

Thanks for reading.

How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?

Just like Spore or pretty much any sleep move, Lovely Kiss could be used as an anesthesia to put distressed Pokemon to sleep.

Since many cute mons learn Sweet Kiss, we can probably use them during combat operations, particularly for storming a place where people are being kept hostage. Send Pichu, Cleffa, etc. into the building. Since they look harmless or are pretty small, the criminals might not notice them or just under-estimate them. Give them a nice Sweet Kiss and while they are disoriented, storm the building.

How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Battling wise, Lovely Kiss can be used to give Jynx a free turn to set-up or just attack with Dream Eater.

Of the two posts available, @Lord Clowncrete; is the best poster!

What would the next move be? Choose from the following:

Swift, Earthquake, Shadow Ball, Rock Slide, Stun Spore, Razor Leaf, Bubble Beam, Surf, Hydro Pump,
Tri Attack, Seed Bomb, Blizzard, Mud Bomb, Ice Beam, Power Gem, Earth Power, Energy Ball, Moonblast

Thanks for reading.

@winstein;

I choose Earthquake, since it would be interesting to know how people theorize the way in which earthquake actually does damage.

Please take the age of this thread into consideration in writing your reply. Depending on what exactly you wanted to say, you may want to consider if it would be better to post a new thread instead.
