as I recall, GAIN is always installed along with some other program, and it makes a huge deal of telling you that the program you installed is free because of the ads. since it has to be installed by the user and it does nothing more than show targeted ads, I'm not really surprised.

It gets worse. Microsoft bought GATOR not so long ago. That of course is no longer detected by the Microsoft scans.

I thought that MS buying Claria/GAIN/Gator was a false rumor?

Still, this is extremely disturbing. I read about some of these things after the Lavasoft/WhenU problems a few months back. So I now run Spybot S&D next to everything, even MS.
