Well I had been waiting on posting this pic on account that I'm going to have to upload ALL of my files to a new server sometime in the next few days (and as such, am going to have to go back through all my old posts and edit all the image and link URLs), but I figured since I'm going to have my work cut out for me as it is I may as well just share it now! ^.^ It's of Mudkip, which as many of you probably know I happen to be quite fond of, and it features not only a non-cop-out background but also an experimental new (non-black) outlining technique! Anyway, check it out:

Mudkip

I spent hours working on this thing, and it comes to my attention that I made at least one critical mistake on it, but I'm hoping that if I don't point that out maybe nobody else will notice... ^^; Comments and criticism are certainly welcome, since as I said I was trying a new technique out here and would like to know if you all think it works for my style, and all that good schtuff...

Wow, that really is a very impressive picture GS! :O

The outlines give it a pretty cool feel, like chrome or something...

I especially like the eyes. Really smooth effect ^___^

Nice shading and such, though I thought the highlight on the back leg would be covered by the tail. Guess it depends on the light..

I really like the water you drew, its nice how the outside is darker than inside, and you actually put a reflection... the water around the paws is also somehow pretty cool. :0

But wh is there a patch of grey on Mudkip's butt? :O I thought it's just his tail only...

Hehehehe... I think that's the mistake she was talking about. ^^;

Even so, the picture is really good! I like it a whole lot! The outlines, like LoD said, give it such a nice effect and the shading is so smooth! Not to mention the good effects with the rain and the puddle where Mudkip is. And those eyes.... How can you not love those eyes? *huggles Mudkip*

Now, a word of advice: Put your signature on your work. That way it will be more difficult for other people to "steal" your art.

Wow, that is something new. I like it it's nifty with the gradent shading, however I don't know if this was intentional or not but it looks more like a painting of mudkip in the rain, in the rain, rather tha mudkip in the rain. Though it's cooler that way, and all around better IMO...

Heh, actually that thing with the tail and whatnot wasn't what I'd been talking about, but if you guys don't see anything else that looks erroneous at all I won't complain. ^,^;

However, as you have pointed it out, I suppose it is another mistake that I made. Mudkip actually does have a sort of round "plug" (for lack of a better word) at the base of his tail--it's part of his tail, but I think I just made it a bit too big. Really, it probably shouldn't have been noticeable from that angle, but I digress... I guess that's just one more lesson I've learned for next time.

Anyways, thanks you guys! I guess that means the outlining works for it then, which was the main thing I was concerned about... I think I talked about that whole thing on my Teddiursa thread. Thick outlines are kind of a trademark of mine, but while the black can be invasive I was hoping the lighter gradient colors would make for a smoother piece overall, and I suppose it worked at least to an extent (it also took freaking forever to do, but that's another topic entirely). I'll probably do the signature thing on my next pic, too, which I've already started on (it's of Dustox, which I think I must be the only fan of =p).

Again though, thanks so much for the replies... I appreciated them on this one more than ever. :-)

Nice little Mudkip. ^^

I really like the lines on this one--the colors you used for them compliment the shading for a very cool effect. The shading is quite nice, it's very soft and realistic. I like the shading particularly on his tail, but I don't know why. Kudos on the rain and puddle! Water can be so difficult. Mudkip's semi-reflection looks perfect, as do the little splashes. The clarity of the water and the dreary reflections in it make it look very lifelike. I like the gentle shading of the stormy clouds in the background.

I can only find a few minor things wrong with it. One is that his left eye appears to be a little off. It's just a bit too small. You already mentioned the gray patch near his tail--though to be honest, it doesn't bother me at all. It could just be the trait of an individual Mudkip.

Other than that, he's great! He's so cute. ^_^ *Poke*

I couldn't say anything that hasn't already been said. I'm both a huge fan of Mudkip and of colored outlines in place of black. My favorite cartoons are all in that style. ^.^

*keeps staring* So.... so shiny... and cuuuute...

Say, do you do requests? Or (she's going to say it. don't let her sa--*) trades? ^^;;

:eek: You. Are. Simply. Astounding! I wish I could draw like that, it's wonderful and it looks rather real...*reaches out hand to pet the Mudkip and her hand runs into the computer screen* -_-'.

Keep drawing!

*eyes mist over*

Aww, you guys... not only do you take the time out to reply, but you give nice replies! And constructive all the moreso! Now I feel speznishal.

And... I see Pacific Pikachu has come nearest to hitting the mark. The eye thing was the problem I had with it, or really more specifically what I guess you'd call the perspective on the head (I think the gills are off too much too, you see. I know the one on the left should be smaller, but I think I went too far in that direction). I guess nobody else was too bothered by that though, or if they were they didn't say anything, so I guess I'll just have to try and let it slide, and then take pains to prevent making a similar mistake again.

Anyhoo, requests. You know, if this was, say, Serebii I was posting on at the moment, the answer would be a definitive "no", but because I know you guys are a lot more mature and wouldn't go bogging me down (I think =D) I would certainly consider it. Providing, that is, you're willing to wait for an indefinite, but hopefully not too lengthy period of time, since I'm currently committed to finishing my Dustox work-in-progress and also have a Seviper pic lined up in the future. If you don't mind your request being put next in line after that, than ask away!

Heh, what did you mean by the "trade" thing, anyway?

Art trade. In my last fandom, some of the good artists would arrange trades with someone, instead of just taking requests. So she'd do a pic of the victim's (^^;) choice, and her recipient would draw her one in return. Like pre-arranged gift art.

I just really wanted to see you draw my favorite R/S pokémon, but didn't want to beg. ^^ If I drew you something in return, not only would it be nowhere near as cool as yours, but it would take about three years. I am teh lazy.

Traditionally, I think that's been a problem of mine too...

However, I've gotten a lot better about it now, really I have! If you have a certain pokémon that you'd like to see done, by all means request it and I'll put it in line after my Dustox (which is nearly finished now) and Seviper (a gift/request in itself).

If you'd prefer to do a trade then I guess we could, but... honestly, I don't know what I would possibly want to request. Really, with art I'm better at taking requests than making them, which is odd because with everything else, I've found the opposite to be true... *blinks*

>.> Very well, then. I'll see what I can do in return, because I hate making a request without giving something in return. I'm not that selfish. ^^

Can you tackle a Mawile after the Seviper? I love that little thing. Thank you in advance! *bows to GS*

Mawile? I must say I've never even doodled one of those before, but I can certainly give it a try--consider it added onto the list then! On that subject, is there anything about the picture that you'd like to specify... pose, personality, background, anything like that at all? I'm open to whatever.

And if you insist on it being a 'gift exchange' then, I'm up for that. ^.^ I still don't know specifically what to request though, but you might have an idea of some of the things I like... a handful of different pokémon (Arbok, of course, being my favorite pokémon of all!), May interestingly enough, and of course I simply adore anything to do with Team Rocket...

I don't know. What else is there? You could just be creative and make me a surprise... ^.^ *mwee*

EDIT: Chotto matte ne. I've just had a thought... do you think you could possibly do Miyamoto? Because I'd *love* to see that!

Ooooh yay! Wow, but I'm bad at specifying. Make it facing forward, with the steel jaw-horn-thingy behind -- that's the first thing I can think of. Also big-eyed and cute, for I have this idea that Mawile are generally shy and innocent, and use their jawlike horns as a defense mechanism... but now we're delving into why I like them so much. ^^;

The background is up to you, though, as is the outlining. You don't have to go into that gradient shading if you don't want to. ^_~

A Miyamoto half-surprise? Yokai shimashita! *sketch sketch*

Meep, joy! I'm going to get a Miyamoto surprise! ^.^ *giddy*

And believe it or not, that's pretty much the same kind of idea I had myself when I was doing some conceptual sketches! *has been trying to come up with a good pose and expression* I'm excited about this one now, and all the moreso since I've never drawn Mawile before... this whole art-trade thing is definitely looking to be a fun idea (it's only a shame trying it never occurred to me sooner)!

The reflection of the orange-y part looks off, but otherwise it's very cute and very clean, I love the rain and the puddle. It definately wouldn't have the same effect if it had a black outline so kudos on that being colored.
