My pikachu and butterfree!

hey all, im in need of some help with my pikachu and butterfree in leaf green, see i just lost to the elite four and one of the main reasons was my pikachu (level 61) faints too easy, all it takes is a phycic attack or a sludge bomb and my pikachu faints in one hit, my butterfree (level 60) is also the same, I don't know much about stats but is there anyway I can help my pokemon last after the first turn in battle? they know the best attacks but i never get to unleash them because they faint so quickly.

BTW this is my 2nd time attempting the elite four.
