So, I'm attempting to go through a playthrough of Pearl version. In all games, I have a particular formula for which I create my team.

1. The Starter. The starter I keep in my team pretty much forever unless I somehow manage to phaze it out early (As I did with Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium in G/S). Sometimes fulfills multiple roles in the party.

2. The Psychic Powerhouse. Usually an Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam. In Generation 3, this became a Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir (Or Drowzee/Hypno in FRLG)unless I could manage to find a way to arrange trades. Psychic types are consistently my favorite type, and thus always has a place in my team.

3. The Hydro. Sometimes fulfilled by the Starter. I ALWAYS keep a Water type on hand in order to make use of Surf. Trained with the others, and usually strong.

4: The Bruiser. Any Type, though the first is often a Fighting or Normal type. In the case of a Starter fulfilling multiple roles, there are several Bruisers.

5. The Flyer. Always a Flying type to make use of Fly.

6. The HM Whore. In 4th generation, this is Bidoof. After a while, it is benched to room another Bruiser.

Later, 7. The Legend. Self explanatory. sometimes also a Flyer.

In my Diamond team, my Starter was Piplup, who later became my Hydro. I was able to arrange a trade and so my Psychic became Alakazam. My Bruiser became Lopunny (Through high affection and the use of Return and Strength). Flyer is Staraptor. Second Bruiser is Lucario. Third Bruiser is a traded Infernape, though it had been a Golem.

With Pearl, I am presented a challenge. I am unable to fill the role of Psychic because I am not able to really arrange a trade for Alakazam, and Kadabra doesn't seem to have Alakazam's utility and sheer power. Also, there aren't any other early Psychics I can chase. I try to have different versions use different starters, and given the choice of Infernape/Torterra, neither make my choosing easy. Torterra makes several gyms rather easy to go through, but lacks in any strength until it actually becomes Torterra. Infernape is a difficult choice because several gyms are made harder.

Trying to assemble my Pearl team has proven extremely difficult. I may have to abandon my usual formula altogether. Can anyone offer me advice on how to assemble a team, as in, what kind of pokemon should I try for early on that I can use for the remainder of my playthrough? D/P doesn't quite give you the quality early level Pokemon that Generation 3 had. Note, this is just for playing through the game. Doing all the endgame training and such I usually don't worry about until I start on the Elite 4.

My current Pearl team is irreparably broken and I'm going to start from scratch. I shudder to think how I'm going to move past Fantina, who proved to be a real problem in my Diamond team.

EDIT: Please move this to the appropriate forum. I didn't see the subforum there.

Staraptor, Infernape, and Buizel rip through the game by themselves. Throw in a ground type and something with icebeam, and you'll be fine.

Have you asked people here to arrange a trade back? It's easy to do if you have access to Wi-Fi.

Yeah, I bet a bunch of people would be perfectly willing to set up a trade with you and then trade it back so you can evolve. Try and find someone else who's in your same situation (needs to evolve via trade but can't -- there's a Trade Coordination thread in this section) and set up a trade. That way, you both win!

I found Empoleon to be absolutely useless in-game -- Floatzel and Gyarados do the exact same job so much better. I chose Turtwig in Diamond and Torterra's really worked out well for me, but given that your only other option for a fire type (unless I'm understanding wrong and you're wanting advice for a Platinum team, not restarting your Pearl?) is Ponyta/Rapidash, it's awfully hard to pass up Chimchar. It should get easier as it evolves and gets the Fighting-type as well as the Fire-type. If you evolve it early enough, you could conceivably have a much easier time at the first gym with a Fighting-type, but I was fine with Turtwig and Razor Leaf. If you do choose Turtwig, then Eterna shouldn't be hard -- just use your Starly/Staravia and Aerial Ace. Did you forget that Flying was effective against Grass?

Bidoof/Bibarel is great as an HM whore, but if you play it right, Bibarel could be plenty useful on it's own, too. However, for your Hydro, you can't really go wrong with Gyarados. You get the Old Rod in Jublilife, so in theory you could have a Gyrados by the first gym if you train hard enough. Plus, Gyrados can learn Ice Fang naturally, so that covers your Ice-type move too. But Floatzel kicks ass, especially because it's so fast. The choice is yours -- or you could make Gyara one of your other 'bruisers' and have Floatzel as your 'Hydro'.

I am indeed restarting my Pearl team.

I have a Floatzel in my team, but my team just seems to lack.

The best I have are

27 Floatzel

26 Grotle

26 Luxio

28 Staravia (I am aware of Staravia's ability to single-handedly murder Gardenia's gym)

22 Bronzor (Gotta have that psychic...)

17 Zubat (Kind of a one-off. I'd have something different, but it's just filler, usually Bidoof is here instead). I'm currently at Maylene's gym.

The trick to having fun with multiple playthroughs of the game is to try something different. Don't just go through with the same tried-and-true Pokemon each time. Mix it up a little! For instance, here's my Pearl team.

- Torterra
- Raichu
- Octillery
- Rapidash
- Staraptor
- Kricketune

And in Diamond...
- Honchkrow
- Lucario
- Alakazam
- Floatzel
- Pachirisu
- Roserade

And I've done worse, too, in previous generations, on purpose. I went through Sapphire with mono-type teams on numerous occasions. Who cares if a team doesn't fit your "formula"? It might be more fun to play with a team you normally wouldn't consider playing with! (for example, I found Kricketune surprisingly usable throughout the whole game, and actually almost swept Cynthia with it thanks to Swords' Dance).

And remember this one other thing: real men play set. :)

I managed to create a decent team with the following:
Empoleon-Hydro Cannon, Bubblebeam, Drill Peck, Hydro Pump
Weavile(temp)-Dark Pulse, Night Slash, Shadow Claw, Icy Wind
Gengar-Dark Pulse, Psychic, Shadow Ball, Night Shade
Luxray-Crunch, Spark, Discharge, Bite
Staraptor-Brave Bird, Close Combat, Fly, Aerial Ace
And you can put whatever Pokemon here,
I would suggest Arcanine

But see everything is covered, minus Grass
You have you're Electric w/ Dark moves
You're flying w/ Fighting moves
Powerhouse Water
Dark w/ Ice and Ghost
Ghost w/ Dark, Ghost, and Psychic
And I HAD Kricketune because of its insane HP but I would much rather have Arcanine and have powerhouse fire moves

Btw the PERFECT HM whore is Golduck,
It's perfect

Actually, Bibarel and Skarmory together can cover all the HM bases.

Bibarel: Surf, Waterfall, Rock Climb, Strength
Skarmory: Cut, Fly, Defog, Rock Smash

Or if you really want to be thorough...

Tropius: Sweet Scent, Cut, Strength, Rock Smash
Xatu: Teleport, Fly, Defog, Flash
Bibarel: Dig, Surf, Waterfall, Rock Climb

Gives you all field moves except Softboiled/Milk Drink and Chatter.

My team was as follows (pre Elite 4), I KO'd the orburgh Gym treaners and leader with my turtwig:

Luxray: Strength, Thunder Fang, Thunderbolt, Discharge
Starraptor: Brave Bird, Fly, Ariel Ace, Defog
Torterra: Earthquake, Cut, Razor leaf, Rock Climb
Golduck: Hydro Pump, Dig, Surf, Waterfall
BiBarel: Rock Smash, Hyper Fang, Take Down, (don't remember last move)
Dustox: Bug Buzz, Stun Spore, Poison Powder, Silver Wind

I used most of the pokemon above in E4 Matchs, minus Bibirel and Dustox, but can't recall off top of my head, what the last two were.

post e4:

Luxray: Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Thunderbolt, Ice Fang
Starraptor: Brave Bird, Fly, Ariel Ace, Defog
Torterra: Earthquake, Cut, Frenzy Plant, Rock Climb
Golduck: Hydro Pump, Dig, Surf, Waterfall
Dragonite: Flamethrower, Outrage, Draco Meteor, Ice Beam
Emploeon: Grass Knot, Blizzard, Substatute, Surf

I've played through Pearl at least 3 times, and this is the team I've always used:

-Infernape: Flamethrower, Stone edge, rock climb, close combat
-Empoleon: Ice beam, waterfall, hydro pump, strength(used to be metal claw)
-Torterra: Wood hammer, earthquake, crunch, leaf storm(used to be rock smash)
-lucario: Aura sphere, dark pulse, dragon pulse, extremespeed
-drifblim: fly, defog, shock-wave, shadow ball
-luxray: thunder fang, spark, crunch, strength

Infernape, Torterra, and Lucario will prove themselves very powerful, if you can overcome their weaknesses. Empoleon and Drifblim are good, but won't be as outstanding as the first three. And Luxray is good, but he got replaced by Palkia.

Yes, call me what you will. I use all three starters and I'm proud of it.

You...you teach HM moves to your team? And you use Defog? The worst move of them all? Wow. You must be easy to beat.

my team in diamond was chimchar budew shinx buizel starly and bidoof all fully evolved can tear through the regular game easily.

Well, I change my team around after beating the Elite 4, but at least not all HMs are completely weak. It's just how I play, and I've actually only used HM-slaves for HMs my team can't learn.

Plus, I don't have Wi-fi, so I can't really tell how right or wrong you might be.

Don't be dissing Surf and Waterfall now. Whirlpool had its uses, too. Defog can actually clear away barriers like Brick Break, so it has some uses, too (albeit few competitively).

@flaming infernape: I'll call you "oh my god, how the hell do you manage to not get bored of using the same team every time?" :)

No kidding. I mean, I'm bored with my Diamond team, but I've got a few good pokes on there that I don't want to loose, so I'm not able to replay it. I know I'll be using a different team in Platinum, when it comes out. Perhaps Empoleon, Roserade, Houndoom, Luxray, Honchkrow, and Espeon? I wonder...
