Today I arrived back at the High School to find our third gun/bomb threat since sixth grade was occurring.
I go to Governor's School in the morning, which is at the Community College. I arrive back just in time for Third Period and the beginning of first lunch.
So anyway, at the beginning of 2nd period, apparently someone said something about a bomb in the student e-mail (great system there, huge waste of resources) and then the entire school was evacuated to the bleachers in the football field.
When I arrived, all the driveways were blocked. I pulled over next to Statesmen Computer and my friend Jay pulled up and someone walked out from Statesmen to tell us about the bomb threat and that it would be at least another two hours before classes resumed.
So Jay and I drove over to the Corner Market and met up with three other Gov. School people. I called my mom and asked her to call the school and find out what I should do. When she called me back, she said the HS phone rang and rang, and upon calling the school board, was told that we were free to go home for the duration.
So mom continued trying to call the school and finally got an answer at 2:05, about a third of the way into Fourth Period, and was told that they'd only returned to class a few minutes before. I was told I was not being counted absent for missing last period, but then at 2:30 (when it was too late to be counted present) I was told I was being counted absent.
So I have two debate topics here.
1) What do you think about the school's bomb response plan? If someone really wanted to do some harm, they would plant a bomb under the bleachers in the football field and make the threat. Everyone goes to the bleachers, boom. The saying 'shooting fish in a barrel' applies here. Especially considering you're going from 700+ students spread among four buildings, one of which is very large, to 700+ students all on the same set of bleachers.
I personally think we should all go to various open fields, such as the softball field.
2) What about the total lack of communication? I showed up and had to hear first from a friend, then I had to call my mom who had to go to the Assistant Superintendant of Schools to get information that I could go home. Then they have the nerve to mark me absent without even attempting to notify me that school was back in session!
Thoughts?
