My thoughts about the Japanese version of Mewtwo Strikes Back

In a word: AWESOME!!!

To elaborate, it felt more like a serious film than its English dub. The Jap Mewtwo sounded better than the English one. He felt more of a threat than his English counterpart. The title screen was epic. I enjoyed how the voice acting from the actors from the show seem better than the acting from the episodes. The music, despite some of it being from the TV show, was well done and fitted the mood of the scenes. The composition was great, and came as a surprise since I only saw the film twice in widescreen, when the dub was in theaters and when I just saw the Japanese version. My only complaint, besides the use of TV music, is Sweet's voice. I always imagined her sounding younger.

All in all, I prefer it to the dub, as per the episodes I saw in Japanese. Tell me you thoughts on it.

I got this movie on DVD from Japan quite recently along with the 8th movie. I agree this movie is definatly better in Japanese. I also feel the same for Pikachu's Summer Vacation despite it not having many lines in English/Japanese the voice over made much more sense than the Pokedex and the songs were more catchy.

I concur on the Japanese version. I feel that the Seiyuus put a certain terseness just on an emotional level into their performances that's good enough that you can nigh hear the pain in their voices. I also prefer Mewtwo's Seiyuu, but don't think the English VA did a bad job at all - he did add a good depth to Mewtwo's tone. I'm also not irked by the added CGI (after the original Japanese release), so much as the representation of it. But I'd say that's a minor qualm.

But I feel the English version was sappy by comparison, forcing "fighting is wrong" morales down the viewer's throat (more so than at the characters), and I felt "Brother my Brother" added a sappy touch to the movie, whereas the original score added a pensive touch (which to me is infinitely more effectual). I also feel the dialogue was much better in the Japanese version. But I don't think the English dub is that deplorable. I do think Veronica Taylor, Rachel Lillis, and Eric Stuart did good jobs in their respective roles.

But I'd say the Japanese version indeed has superiority... IMO.

If you understand Japanese or have a translated script in front of you, yes. It's absolutely tear-jerking.
