A glance through a video showing the transmission of the Perap Wonder Card brought a most interesting fact to my attention - Diamond and Pearl's Mystery Gift feature actually has a new option. Added to the familiar screen where the "Wireless Communication" and "Friend" options are displayed, it is possible to connect to the WiFi service similarly to the Global Trade Station and Battle Tower.
But that is all I can garner from one screen. Surprisingly, the so-called informative web sites covering Diamond and Pearl fail to make mention of this new mode (Japanese ones included, though I am open to the possiblity that my searching abilities are limited). I have no idea what an attempt at connection yields at this point in time.
What I do know thanks to Coronis, is that Mystery Gift can be unlocked in-game. Apparently, this is done by talking to a person at the Kotobuki TV Station. Looking at the GBA games, one would take this for granted, but it is not the case. The two events where Mystery Gift has been used so far automatically triggered the menu option - the game receives the signal even before Mystery is accessed (an ability which also allows it to receive the special signal from Ranger). It follows that, being able to open up Mystery Gift individually is meant for players unable to attend events, or even meet other players who can share gifts. This means WiFi.
Now, conclusions should not be drawn just yet. Game Freak does not deserve our enthusiasm after absolutely failing to reach the potential of the Wireless Adapter Mystery Gift. After all, only the WiFi option is exclusive to Diamond and Pearl, whereas the Friend option is first and foremost the GBA's territory. Alas, few are those who are actually aware of this obscure fact, since the only Wonder Cards to be distributed were of the unshareable kind--promotional tickets. A sheer number of possibilities targeted at the Friend mode went ignored for no reason.
That said, I would still like to know what kind of message is shown upon creating a connection. To those of you who have the game as well as access to WiFi, please try unlocking Mystery Gift. Once done, select the third option and report what happens.
