I was considering getting the FR or LG GBA games so I could get a few of the older pokemon, I realise of course I cant trade them to my Pearl game before I get the national dex, but could I maybe trade them to my friend who has the National Dex, then Trade with him through the DS games to get those pokemon? Would it work do you think, or would I be incapable of recieving them.

Yes.

I'm up to the 7th gym, and I've traded for a Treecko and Zigzagoon. :O

Ah but thats Ruby and Saph? Would the Fire Red ones work cos they are the original 150 arnt they? or is Zig in the national Dex?

Treecko and Zig are both in the national dex for Pearl and Diamond..you can have pokemon from the earlier games before you get the national dex. They just won't show up in your pokedex, but you'll still have them.

Not that it matters much, two people have verified it works for you . . . but I'll be the third to verify. I traded to get a ditto, charmander, squirtle, chikorita, and a torchic before I got the national dex.

Once I got the Nat Dex from Oak, the charmander is listed as the first entry in my nat dex (with three question marks in front of it for the bulba/venus/ivysaur line.)

Rather than making a new topic I will ask here.

Im assuming you can't trade from a GBA to your DS game until you have the national dex. A few questions tho.

When do you get the national dex?

How do you get them off of the GBA game after you have the National Dex?

Do you have to have the GBA game insterted into the DS to be able to use the pokemon on your DS game, even after transfering them?

Two things:

[1] Beat the Elite Four.

[2] Complete your Sinnoh Dex.

Pal Park opens up on Route 221 after you get the National Dex; every 24 hours, you can transfer 6 Pokes to the Pal Park from each GBA cartridge (i.e., 6 Pokes per cartridge per 24 hours).

Do you have to have the GBA game insterted into the DS to be able to use the pokemon on your DS game, even after transfering them?

Nope! But leaving them inserted allows you to catch extra Pokes in the grass and with the PokeRadar, depending on the cartridge.

If I catch one like that does the game have to be in it all the time after that? or does catching one from the GBA also transfer it?

No no no, that's not how it works.

See, every time a new Pokémon game is released, it has every single Pokémon currently in existence already programmed into it. The only thing that really gets "transferred" are the stats, nature, moves, individual values, level, ribbons, etc. -- the specifics.

Diamond and Pearl already have every Pokémon programmed into the game's memory. By transferring or trading, you basically "unlock" it.

Oooooh and having the game in allows them to appear, and once they are caught i dont need the GBA game in anymore?

Do all the GBA games work or is it only certain ones? would Fire Red for example have the older pokemon (1-150)?

All of the GBA games allow you to transfer Pokémon you've caught on that GBA game to your PC in Diamond or Pearl.

As for which Pokémon appear in the grass in Sinnoh due to having a GBA game inserted... there's a list somewhere. But yes, I believe all of the Pokémon that appear due to insertion are from the same generation as the game that is inserted.

For example, inserting FireRed allows you to catch Elekid in the grass in Valley Windworks, while inserting LeafGreen allows you to catch Magby on Route 227.

This may be pushing my luck but would I be able to get Mewtwo this way? and possibly (though I doubt it) even Mew?

Once you catch Mew in FireRed or LeafGreen, you can transfer him. This goes for any and all legendaries. However, Mew is only obtainable through Nintendo Events now (AFAIK).

awh and theres no Nintendo events ever near me :(
how sucky *cries*

Not true . . . I have the national dex and I have yet to defeat the Elite 4. While yes, if you beat the elite four, you have most likely filled your Sinnoh Dex, it is by no means a requirement.
