Those new to Pokémon games or those who need a refresher may be wondering about Pokémon natures, introduced in Generation III. These are listed on each Pokémon's summary page, and they affect stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed) and what kind of Poffins that Pokémon likes to eat.

Traits, new to Generation IV, are also listed on the summary page and at first glance appear to describe that Pokémon's personality. However, the trait that is listed is an indication of that Pokémon's highest [bp=DVs]IV[/bp]- in other words, its genes.

Natures and Their Effects on Stats
A + before the stat means that stat gets a 10% boost in growth, and a - means the stat gets a 10% reduction in growth when leveling up.

Poffin flavors correspond to [bp=Pokémon Contest]contest[/bp] traits:
Spicy = [bp=Cool Contest]Cool[/bp]
Sour = [bp=Tough Contest]Tough[/bp]
Sweet = [bp=Cute Contest]Cute[/bp]
Dry = [bp=Beauty Contest]Beauty[/bp]
Bitter = [bp=Smart Contest]Smart[/bp]

Lonely: +Attack, -Defense; likes Spicy, dislikes Sour
Brave: +Attack, -Speed; likes Spicy, dislikes Sweet
Adamant: +Attack, -Special Attack; likes Spicy, dislikes Dry
Naughty: +Attack, -Special Defense; likes Spicy, dislikes Bitter

Bold: +Defense, -Attack; likes Sour, dislikes Spicy
Relaxed: +Defense, -Speed; likes Sour, dislikes Sweet
Impish: +Defense, -Special Attack; likes Sour, dislikes Dry
Lax: +Defense, -Special Defense; likes Sour, dislikes Bitter

Timid: +Speed, -Attack; likes Sweet, dislikes Spicy
Hasty: +Speed, -Defense; likes Sweet, dislikes Sour
Jolly: +Speed, -Special Attack; likes Sweet, dislikes Dry
Naive: +Speed, -Special Defense; likes Sweet, dislikes Bitter

Modest: +Special Attack, -Attack; likes Dry, dislikes Spicy
Mild: +Special Attack, -Defense; likes Dry, dislikes Sour
Quiet: +Special Attack, -Speed; likes Dry, dislikes Sweet
Rash: +Special Attack, -Special Defense; likes Dry, dislikes Bitter

Calm: +Special Defense, -Attack; likes Bitter, dislikes Spicy
Gentle: +Special Defense, -Defense; likes Bitter, dislikes Sour
Sassy: +Special Defense, -Speed; likes Bitter, dislikes Sweet
Careful: +Special Defense, -Special Attack; likes Bitter, dislikes Dry

Neutral natures affect neither stats nor favorite/disliked flavors. No stat boost or reduction is applied. These natures are Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky. Pokémon with these natures will eat any flavor of Poffin you give them.

Traits and Their Meanings
IVs are numbers, each between 0 and 31, that are assigned to each Pokémon's stat (Attack, Defense, etc.). The higher the IV, the higher that stat will be when the Pokémon is leveled up. This is why two Pokémon of the same species, level, and nature will have different stats. The trait that is listed on a Pokémon's summary page indicates which stat has the highest IV.

HP: Loves to eat, often dozes off, often scatters things, scatters things often, likes to relax
Attack: Proud of its power, likes to thrash about, a little quick tempered, likes to fight, quick tempered
Defense: Sturdy body, capable of taking hits, highly persistent, good endurance, good perseverance
Special Attack: Highly curious, mischievous, thoroughly cunning, often lost in thought, very finicky
Special Defense: Strong willed, somewhat vain, strongly defiant, hates to lose, somewhat stubborn
Speed: Likes to run, alert to sounds, impetuous and silly, somewhat of a clown, quick to flee

Gah, I had no idea the IVs for each phrase were so sporadic. I'd been under the impression that 'Proud of it's power' had the possibility of weilding 31 IVs in atack, so I guess that explains why the Staravia I've been training is about one point off from the maximum attack for it's species. ^^;

This means...

MY SHINY ABSOL HAS AN ATTACK IV OF 27! Plus, all Ray's EV training in Attack and Speed...

But how can you tell that it has an IV of 27?I understand that the traits give out the IV,but is there a way for people to know what IV it has.

For example:I have a LV 36 Corphish with an adamant nature and has the likes to fight trait,but it doesn't say what IV number it has.Is there a way to find out?

Natures and Breeding

I'm trying to hatch a modest Tentacool, but it's just not happening. I've hatched sooooo many eggs, and not one has been modest. But I've noticed that Tentacools with some natures are hatched more often than those with other natures (like with the specific Tentacruel parents that I'm using, naughty and impish Tentacools are hatched most often).

So what I'm asking is:
1. Does this trend mean anything, or is it just coincidence? Are natures genetic?
2. Is there a way to use this trend to my advantage and have a greater chance of hatching a Pokemon with a specific nature?

Thanks to anyone who can answer. (And sorry if those answers are common knowledge. I'm still rather new at this.)

IVs are genetic, natures aren't, I'm pretty sure.

Also, if you have a Modest Ditto/female Modest Tentacool, you can slap an Everstone on it and its babies will have a 50% chance of being Modest.

Hmmm yeah, I forgot about the Everstone thing. Thanks for answering my question, Tina. I think I'll try to trade somebody for a female modest Tenta.
