NBC Cancels "Heroes", Picks up "The Cape"

NBC cancels Heroes.

NBC ended months of speculation this afternoon by announcing the cancellation of Heroes after four seasons.

Although the fate of the superhero drama seemed sealed by plummeting ratings — less than 5 million viewers tuned in for February’s Season 4 finale, down from about 17 million in Season 2 — there was an outside chance the show could be brought back for a 13-episode wrap-up or a two- or four-hour movie. But The Live Feed reports that the ratings decline, combined with high production costs and the number of hour-long shows on the network’s fall schedule, dashed the possibility of a return.

Created by Tim Kring, Heroes premiered in September 2006, quickly becoming one of the most-discussed shows of the season. Despite numerous Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, the series steadily lost viewers and, some would argue, direction. Season 2 was cut short by the Writers Guild of America strike, and Heroes never seemed to regain its momentum.

NBC announces "The Cape"

"The Cape" is a one-hour drama series starring David Lyons ("ER") as Vince Faraday, an honest cop on a corrupt police force, who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. He is forced into hiding, leaving behind his wife, Dana (Jennifer Ferrin, "Life on Mars") and son, Trip (Ryan Wynott, "Flash Forward"). Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken Palm City, Faraday becomes "The Cape" his son's favorite comic book superhero -- and takes the law into his own hands. Rounding out the cast are James Frain ("The Tudors") as billionaire Peter Fleming -- The Cape's nemesis -- who moonlights as the twisted killer: Chess; Keith David ("Death at a Funeral") as Max Malini, the ringleader of a circus gang of bank robbers who mentors Vince Faraday and trains him to be The Cape, Summer Glau ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") as Orwell, an investigative blogger who wages war on crime and corruption in Palm City; and Dorian Missick ("Six Degrees") as Marty Voyt, a former police detective and friend to Faraday. "The Cape" is a Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun production from executive producer/creator Thomas Wheeler ("Empire"), executive producer/director Simon West ("Con Air"), the executive producing team of Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun (NBC's "Mercy), and executive producer Gene Stein ("Accidentally on Purpose").

So Heroes finally got put out of its misery (though I thought it was finally starting to turn itself around). And we get a NEW super-hero drama to take its place. One that seems to be less about powers, and more about...well...I'm not too certain. Though that plot sounds awfully familiar...

It's about time that Heroes died. The show's been meandering, practically since the beginning of season 2. The way it raised so many people's expectations and then utterly failed to deliver on any of its potential? It kind of pissed me off, to be honest, and I wish they'd have cancelled it years ago. Nobody deserved to be making money off that.

I've heard NBC also gave Law & Order the axe. Good move, IMO... ever since they brought in the 2 new (not all that bright) detectives and the dumbass that replaced McCoy, the show hasn't been nearly as good.

I'm more disappointed by the axing of FlashForward than of Heroes. Robert J. Sawyer's book is brilliant, but I guess it's just too much education with not enough action for the majority of viewers...

Keith David! Woohoo!

The Cape might just be worth checking out. I definitely like the idea of a man without powers who rises to be a hero more than people who gain powers and don't really do much with them. This could be like Kick-Ass, but hopefully this will actually deliver on its promise instead of just being a bunch of action scenes.
