After playing through Heart Gold once with Chikorita as my starter, I hit a dead end at the Dragon type gym. No amount of training could've helped me. The only way I had made that far was by sheer luck most of the time.

Anyway, I am starting a new game and need help planning a good team. I've been leaning to either Totodile or Cyndaquil as my starter. Can I have any other suggestions?

PokéWalker. Walk a lot so you can unlock the Blue Lake course, and you can get a Dratini.

In both my HG and SS, the PokéWalker gave me some awesome powerhouses (Kangaskhan in HG, Dratini and Beldum in SS).

Why didn't you just get an Ice Type from Ice Cave?

Good point. I owned that gym with a Mamoswine. Kingdra can be a problem, but a tough sweeper (Like Outraging Kangaskhan) makes short work of it.

If you have Platinum, I suggest asking a friend with Platinum and a DS to hold your strongest pokemon for you (via trading). Then, pop in your HG cartridge and trade back pokemon so you have a stronger advantage in your new game. This works wonders for me if I'm stuck at a gym.

If you or someone you know has Platinum, catch a sneasel and evolve it into Weavile teach it Ice Punch and trade it to your Heartgold. It works wonders in Clair's gym. I also recomend starting with Cyndaquil.

If you use Totodile that gym will be easy. My Feraligatr swept the thing and it was underleveled. Juyst make sure it knows Ice Punch/Ice Fang

my over levelled meganium took clair apart! just make it learn frenzy plant from the move learner in the same city.

I chose Cyndaquil as my starter & I think it's definately the best both starter for that region & best of the fire starters. The dragon gym is still tough, but others have mentioned you should get an ice-type pokemon from the Ice Path & level it up.
wish I had thought of that. I had to take Clair out with a Typhlosion, Ho-oh, & Bellossom. I have much to learn.
Btw, Jynx SUCKS. It has such a low defense, it makes leveling up almost impossible, as a wild pokemon half its level can kill mine in one blow. 0_o
Good luck!

Feraligatr > Everything. Ice fang her down and profit. Plus the Totodile line is good for pretty much every Gym. If you do go with Cyndaquil, I suggest grabbing a Lapras from Union Cave on Friday after you get Surf. Learns Ice Beam at like level 32 and will destroy Dragon types.

I started my SoulSilver with Chikorita and I had no problem with Clair. I had a Dragonite on my team though. You're never in a dead end type-wise because you have options to help you.

I prefer Totodile. You've already heard the Ice Fang/Ice Punch suggestions. But Feraligatr is just a real B@d@$$. It can easily get you through the game. The Grass starters are always the toughest challenge to play through with in the game. I'm hoping I won't have that problem with Tstutarja... or should I go Pokabu... gotta see the final EVOs.

I carved up with a lapras & destroyed Gyrados with an ampharos but i smashed him with BAYLEAF Kingdra was no chance
