I don't really see the need for it; I already have a 3DS, why do I need a slightly better one?

Can someone clarify if this is like the DSI, or is it the next generation of handhelds and Nintendo is making the transition to it over the next couple of years.

I completely agree

I believe it's like the DSI of this gen

I hope the Pokemon games stay compatible with the normal 3DS for a bit, I need the money to buy Bionicle 2015 sets. :p

Calling it the "New 3DS" is kinda weird, especially looking back in 10 years or so. A better name could be the Super 3DS. They wouldn't even have to change their marketing, just replace every instance of the word "new" with "super". "Super control!", "super 3D viewing!", "super speed!".

What's the next model going to be called? The newer new? xD

I'd personally like to see reviews myself and comparison videos before buying, but it definitely has my interest.

It's like the DSi, but it has its own exclusives.

As long as Pokemon isn't part of the 'exclusives', I guess I don't have much complaints.

I'd actually like to see 7th gen be New 3DS exclusive actually. For one, 6th gen stretched the 3DS hardware. And IDK about the rest of you, but I'd rather have it be New 3DS exclusive and not suffer from lag and lack of 3D than have it be on regular 3DS and still have those issues. Second, 7th gen would be very boring if it was still on the 3DS, because it'd be harder for them to improve the gameplay without upgrades in hardware.

Let 7th Gen be on the next console/handheld, not the New 3DS. Like you said, 7th gen would be very boring on the 3DS line, so if they want to bring it with upgrades, do it properly with a whole new complete set, not half-new, half-3DS. Let 7th Gen be completely new and free from the 3DS line. I wouldn't want to see Pokemon 7th gen on a DSi-ish version of the 3DS.

That option seems to be off the table at this point. The existence of the New 3DS implies that the 3DS' successor isn't coming until at least 2017, probably 2018 I'm guessing. That's too long for them to wait for the next gen, so it looks like we're getting another 5th gen situation for 7th gen.

Then why not make it compatible for all 3DS lines if it's another 5th gen situation? Besides, if it's compatible with all 3DS family members, then they'd sell Pokemon more easily :/ BW and B2W2 were playable on the DS family AND the 3DS, so I don't get why 7th gen should be exclusive to a single handheld that's part of a family line.

You were the one agreeing with me that you didn't want a new generation without upgrades.

It's going to sell regardless of what console they put it on simply because it's Pokemon.

It's been established that "there will be exclusive software and non-exclusive software that will take advantage of the new CPU and have improved graphics and controls for the New 3DS system." So the Generation VII entries could be like Gold and Silver in that they would be playable on the 3DS but still noticeably benefit from the New 3DS.

Ok idk even more :/ I don't want a 7th gen pokemon game to be on a single New 3DS console and be unplayable on the rest of the family members.
Gen 7 should be on an entirely new family line, or be compatible with the rest of the 3DS family and simply benefit from the New 3DS - it's what I'd like personally. If it's not like that, can't be helped.

We'll see what happens when these things get released outside of Japan before I decide to take the "new" plunge or not. For now they have my interest, but I'm gonna need more than a portable Xenoblade and built-in NFC technology to make such a purchase.

But already I can see my right thumb struggling with that C-stick, it's so small. :/

I'm personally excited for it. Nintendo also seems to be doing it right this time releasing both the smaller and XL version at the same time. This will likely end up like the Gameboy Color did with exclusives. I actually wouldn't be surprised if Pokemon Z / XY2 is exclusive to the new 3DS. Hopefully Nintendo does the right thing and completely replaces the original 3DS and the 3DS XL with the New 3DS and the New XL. I know I'll be picking up a New XL around when it launches in the US.
