I don't know why they don't just go ahead and start giving the series a proper release. The demand is obviously there.

I'd buy them too if they made real boxsets. That way I can have all the dub episodes via the DVD boxsets here in the U.S., and then get the Japanese version too.

Of course I'd love to see Viz put the Japanese version on the dub DVDs like FUNimation does with their properties, but I know its nothing but a pipedream.

Ditto. It'd be all the reason I need to buy a region-free DVD player - I'm dying to have the Japanese version on DVD, in full sets instead of these one-to-three episode cheapos that they keep doing.

Are anime DVD box sets common in Japan (as common as TV box sets are over here)? 'Cause if so, then this is even more confusing...

Not really the only boxsets of Anime that I know of in Japan are the Dragon Box sets for Dragon Ball/Z/GT

I never understood why they don't do boxsets. This show has almost 600 episodes now, don't they think with 600 episodes they might as well put eps on boxsets so people can rewatch it?

Watching through Pokemon as a whole is going to take forever now with 600 episodes and 12 movies, it almost feels like "work" to get through a series of this length. It'd be great to own it for easy viewing on DVD.

Actually there are tons of anime that release boxsets. Why Pokemon doesn't do this, I don't know. You'd think they'd at least commercially release those rental DVDs like every other anime out there.

Maybe once the series is over they'll do this. They started with "best of" single episode DVDs, now we have "best of" boxes, so maybe they're testing the waters for a full series release.

Just think about how expensive it would be if they did release boxsets, especially for those of us who would have to import the DVDs from Japan or buy it from some anime website that sells Japanese DVDs.

Do they usually subtitle Japanese DVDs in english? Or is that a rarity? Do the Japanese Dragonball boxsets in Japan have english subtitles?

English subtitles on Japanese DVDs are pretty rare, and there's no way Pokemon would do this or else they would have with the movie boxes.

Yeah...there's really no reason for a DVD intended for a Japanese audience to have subtitles in English when the overwhelming majority of the people here can't read the language. American DVDs having Spanish language tracks is different because the U.S. actually does have a sizable Spanish-speaking population.

In any case...DVD box sets are expensive in Japan (a 26-episode box set will usually set you back about $100 or so), so even if they did release them, we'd have to pay top dollar. I'd still pay it because I'm insane like that, but for a lot of people, that wouldn't be feasible at all.

It'd still be nice to have the option, though.

That's kind of disappointing, so what do all the hardcore Pokemon fans in Japan do? Like the Japanese version of us, I suppose, the older fans?

They just rent the DVDs or tape the episodes off TV? Is every episode in Japan at least available on rental DVDs?

Say you want to go to the store and watch a random Orange Island episode, would that ep be available to rent?

Scott, as I said before, the original series (Kanto/OI/Johto) constantly air again and again (2 episodes a day!) in Japan on Kids Station
And until not long ago Pokémon Sunday aired AG
DP air again on both Pokémon Sunday now and also on BS Japan
Sometimes movies also air on TV Tokyo and Kids Station
So really while they don't have the whole show on DVD - it's much easier for them to watch it again on TV than in other countries like here in Israel that we don't get -anything- no reruns, no DVDs, absolutely nothing... most likely we'll never be able to watch the old seasons again and it's really sad

I really don't think people in the US or Japan have anything to complain about - it could be much worse as you can see...

Everything from Advnanced Generation up is available on rental DVD. The first series is available on rental VHS.

All of those except TV-Tokyo are cable networks, though.

Preach it, preach it, preach it. I would kill for Pokemon Japanese DVD boxsets. The show has been going on too long for there not to even be an boxset of the first season (1st 52 episodes I guess, since Japan doesn't have seasons). The day the Japanese producers release Pokemon on DVD (or Blu-Ray, but that's a long shot) and I have the money, I will totally buy them. Heck, I'd settle for those rental DVDs.

Does anyone know if an American can get on a Japanese movie rental site? I know it's a long shot but if it is possible, I would like to try it to see some of the rental Pokemon DVDs.

The longer Pokemon goes on, the less likely there will probably be proper boxsets.

Can you believe Pokemon almost has 600 episodes now? How would they make 600 episodes on affordable DVD boxsets?

You mean like a Japanese equivalent of NetFlix? Um...I don't know if a service like that even exists.

No. I found some Japanese rental sites and I was wondering if I could sign up on one of them.
