It's true, at long last the Black Mages are releasing a third album on March 19th... can't wait.

Either you know them or you don't... basically they make rock-ish versions of the work of Nobuo Uematsu, and if you don't know who he is... well... chances are you wouldn't care less enough about the Black Mages enough to open this topic.

Too lazy for a link right now but it's called "Black Mages III: Darkness and Starlight". I dunno how many of you are familiar with the other two and have heard the tracks on them.

And so far, all we know is that two of the tracks on it will be "Opening- Bombing Mission" from FFVII and "Premonition" from VIII. O/BM is in the teaser for it... at least, just the "Opening" part of it. I'll give a link later unless someone beats me to it.

So... any speculation or hope as to what might be on it that hasn't been on BM1 or The Skies Above?

I'm hoping for "The Legendary Beast", "Eternal Harvest", "The Extreme" (they should have done this one LONG ago), or maybe even Black Mage Village. And if they do something from XII, it better be Theme of the Empire.
"The Landing" is also a good candidate. Not to mention "Weapon Raid"... think of how that one would go over!

They've done two boss battle themes already... perhaps they'll do IX's this time? Or some of the NORMAL battle themes maybe?

"Jenova Absolute" is Black Mage material for sure.

So... any more thoughts?

Isn't Uematsu a member *of* the Black Mages? I'm pretty sure he's the keyboardist.

You know...it'd be an interesting endeavor to do it without vocals (or reduced vocals anyway), but a BM version of One Winged Angel would kick ASS.

Yeah, he formed them if I'm not mistaken... there's a reason they're more of a big deal cause any random band can make their own remixes of them.

But I suppose that would mean they wouldn't have rights to anything from XII, so never mind that.

The black mages are frickin' amazing. And, hav'nt they already done a cover of J-E-N-O-V-A? Or am i getting confused (i dont own any actual albums, but i've been listening to them from online sources for years)

I think they have, but Jenova Absolute =/= J-E-N-O-V-A, they're VERY different.

I wonder if any of Uematsu's Brawl work will be on there. :O

Oooh, awesome, I've been waiting for this for ages. I'd love to see more from IX. If they did "Protecting my Devotion" or "Dark Messenger," I'd be thrilled. I'm also currently on a V music kick, but I'm not betting on anything from there just because they already did the best song from it. Other then that, I'll be happy with anything.

Wasn't this the one where they were going to do a bunch of songs themed on Japanese mythology too?

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but BM preformed the Advent Children version of OWA. It's not totally Black Mage style like some of the other stuff, but it's still really good.

I agree about OWA... I'm so sick of that song, we've had way too many versions of it, and the Advent one is good enough, we don't need another one, leave some space for underlooked ones.

Liberi Fatali, however, doesn't have that many versions, and would work well.

I forgot about "Loss of Me" (or Rose of May), even though it is a piano one, it's one of those like Vamo' alla Flamenco that can be sped up with the same tune.

And I totally forgot about "Martial Law", "Only a Plank Between One and Perdition" and "Never Look Back".

FFVI had one of the best soundtracks in video game history.
Here's hoping for Devil's Lab, Kefka's theme, Shadow's theme, Locke's theme, Edgar and Mash's theme, Mystery Train and Wild West.

Or hell, just do the entire soundtrack. It's all awesome.

Zak - isn't premonintion the Instrumental take on Liberi Fatali to begin with?

Also, I agree with Zak on The Landing and Jenova Absolute.

Also Assault of the Silver (White) Dragon may be cool, if they can pull it off.

Also everything Adamant said. Especially Devil,s Lab, which I was thinking would sound pretty cool, BM-ized.

Although I think BM-izing Kefka's thm would be pretty though.

And lo and behold - Assault is on the latest interview video at dogearrecords (thanks to Zak for pointing that out to me) :-D

And also, apparently something from long-lost III... "This is the Final Battle", according to some other board.

And the interview didn't have subtitles, but other forums seem to claim they're doing a vocal track as well (kinda like Otherworld) and it's from XI, which I know fuck-all about. Can anyone confirm/deny this? www.dogearrecords.com

I retract my previous statement on their not being any Black Mageish type songs left from V, they'd do an awesome version of both final battle themes.

The Mages do an awesome version of anything they touch.

Say hello to the newest addition to this album, "Neo ExDeath".

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS The Extreme is on it.

And here is the full track list:

1) "Opening ~ Bombing Mission" [from Final Fantasy VII] (Kenichiro Fukui)
2) "Neo ExDeath" [from Final Fantasy V - "The Final Battle"] (Michiro Okamiya)
3) "The Extreme" [from Final Fantasy VIII] (Michio Okamiya)
4) "Assault of the Silver Dragons" [from Final Fantasy IX] (Arata Hanyuda)
5) "Kuraminokumo" [from Final Fantasy III - "This is the Last Battle"] (Kenichiro Fukui)
6) "Distant Worlds" [from Final Fantasy XI] (Kenichiro Fukui)
7) "Premonition" [from Final Fantasy VIII] (Tsuyoshi Sekito)
8) "Grand Cross" [from Final Fantasy IX - "Final Battle"] (Keiji Kawamori)
9) "Darkness and Starlight" [from Final Fantasy VI - "Mario and Draco"] (Part 1 by Tsuyoshi Sekito, Part 2 and 4 by Kenichiro Fukui, Part 3 by Michio Okamiya)
10) "LIFE ~in memory of KEITEN~" (Original Composition by Nobuo Uematsu)

Don't really care much about the rest of the new ones myself, but the Extreme... that makes it up for me.

9) "Darkness and Starlight" [from Final Fantasy VI - "Mario and Draco"] (Part 1 by Tsuyoshi Sekito, Part 2 and 4 by Kenichiro Fukui, Part 3 by Michio Okamiya)

Four words.

Oh. My. Effing. Gawd.

This has such potential to be both epic win or epic fail.

(Nice misspelling, mind. Now I can't get the image of Celes singing her lines while disguised as an Italian plumber out of my mind...)

I'm reminded of this (has Mario, and an amusing cameo at the opera).

According to this, "The Black Mages themselves sing the chorus for the song "Darkness and Starlight"."

Who's KEITEN anyway?

Anyway, listening to the opera now. It seems strange to hear it revisioned as rock (or "progressive metal" as wiki calls it), but hey, there's rock operas, so why not?

Maria's voice is...strange. I know it's "operatic", but she sounds like she's only singing with half her throat.

The whole thing seems to match with the pacing of this version, but with additional lines in the middle. I hope to see a new lyric page for this extended version soon.

Overall, very VERY awesome, and that was just the one track!
