HONG KONG (AP) Hollywood studio Twentieth Century Fox plans to make a movie version of the popular Japanese comic book series "Dragonball'' with help from a famed filmmaker from Hong Kong, where Japanese comics and animation are popular.

Fox said in a statement issued Wednesday in Hong Kong that local comedian Stephen Chow will produce the live action movie "Dragonball'' and James Wong, a former writer for the TV series "The X-Files'' and director of "Final Destination,'' will direct.

Chow's credits include "Shaolin Soccer'' and "Kung Fu Hustle.''

Fox said Justin Chatwin, who played the son of Tom Cruise's character in "War of the Worlds,'' will portray the lead character Goku and James Marsters is cast as Goku's main enemy, Piccolo.

Marsters played the vampire Spike on the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer.''

"Dragonball'' revolves around Goku's quest to protect Earth from evil forces who want to take over the planet and control mystical objects known as "dragonballs.''

Fox said the film, whose budget was not announced, will start shooting later this year and will be released worldwide on Aug. 15, 2008.

Fox is owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

Wonder if Marsters is going to go green.

I was sold on seeing this the instant I saw James Marsters' name.

It'll probably still be god-awful, but it has James Marsters.

Wow, so they finally started real work on it. They've been talking about a live action DB movie for almost 10 years now, I didn't think it was ever going to happen.

One question though, how will they get Goku's hair to work?

I'm starting to fear that CHUD's report was right.

So guys! How much will this movie reek?

I'm still in disbelief for this movie, cause there were just so many rumors about it for years. And something about Spike as Piccolo is just a clash of worlds....

Oh yeah, great, a bunch of white people in a Japanese martial arts epic. Great idea, that.

To be fair, most of the characters looked white anyway.

^^That's kind of true, but in actuality Dragonball had most of the characters looking Asian (well... actually more Chinese than Japanese), unlike a lot of anime. I also originally wasn't going to say what Zeta said, but I sure did think it. anyways...

LOL!
well, atleast it's dragonball and not Dragonball Z. I think DBZ is a little too difficult to turn into live action with the length of the plots, but for Dragonball they can just do the world tounament and a training sequence.

However, this movie will be incredibly funny, but how the hell can they get it done in time. I mean, I think that will be amazing considering Dragonball, properly, will require a big budget and a lot of time for special effects editing. (for next summer it'll seem rushed... they really should push for summer in '09)
As funny as I think it is going to be, I really hope it won't be horrible. :p

So was the script finished before the WGA Strike? Because if it wasn't, there's no way in hell it'll make the Summer '08 deadline.

Found a paragraph that references the last Live-action DB story I posted about:

With shooting scheduled to begin later this month, Fox will bow the sci-fi/adventure worldwide Aug. 15. Chatwin has already begun training with 87Eleven, the stunt performance company behind the action sequences in The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy,Mr. & Mrs. Smith and 300.

So, yeah, script's probably done (though I question whether we'll see any of the requisite re-writes).

There won't be any rewrites because ALL the writers are on strike. If anyone works on it, even for a few simple rewrites, they'll be considered a scab and will basically fuck up the rest of their career.

What I really meant was: "I wonder if the strike will be over before the filming of the movie is over." Though, considering both of the producers are writers, I doubt anyone would have a hissy fit if they did a few rewrites just to get the movie done. A COMPLETE rewrite, or even a rewrite of an entire scene, sure, but not a few brief edits.

Funnily enough, there isn't even an Asia on Dragon Ball's Earth (or an Africa, an America or a Europe, for that matter), and most of the characters that look Asian are aliens or part-alien.

Honestly, though, if Goku will be the "unpopular kid in high school who's actually a martial artist", like in the character summary CHUD presented on October... with Chatwin's casting, I'm really afraid that will be the case.

Ah, I see they're giving the franchise the "Dark is Rising/Mario Bros, who gives a flying fuck about the source material" treatment. Considering the teaming hordes of DB fans, they'll probably all die in a horrible riot. Let me wrap my mind about how this is going to go down:

Goku: A troubled but super cool and cute teenager living in New York City who likes to skateboard! He's good at martial arts! But the one thing he isn't good at! TALKING TO GIRLS! OMG!

Chichi: The cute punk rocker girl next door Goku has a crush on.

Master Roshi: Goku's super serious and highly oriental martial arts master. Expect someone to do their best Pat Morita impression.

Bulma: The sexy but sweet girl scientist who eventually falls in love with Goku.

Yamcha: A badass biker from the wrong side of the streets with magical kungfu powers.

Piccolo: Leader of the "Namekian" invasion force which threatens Earth. They attack cities with their "Namek Cannons". Can the magic of the Dragon Balls stop them?

Oolong: Goku's pet black pot-bellied pig who gets six seconds of screentime.

Emperor Pilaf: The leader of a neighborhood band of bullies and ruffians who Goku beats up in the first act.

Oh, and this movie will no doubt be followed by the One Piece movie - which will essentially be the Goonies but with the kids having superpowers corresponding to that of the characters on the show and Chopper as a dog that can talk. Actually, that doesn't sound like quite a bad idea.

^ Zeta... you are killing so many baby kittens right now. Sad thing is, you have probably spoiled the entire movie.

I have very little hope for this movie, now if they did the smart thing and made this movie a parody of Dragonball, at least all the movie being utter crap could be sold as being intentional.

That sounds like something Habunake would say, also... Don't Joke about that One Piece stuff! lol
What's worse (well, not really worse, but) you made me picture the more realistic possibility of a Chinese One Piece movie where Jay Chou plays Luffy where they do realistic pirate battles had have strong Chinese values.
