In Pokémon Pokopia, players take on the role of a Ditto. Soon after waking up from a long sleep of who knows how many years, and adopting a human form based on a photo on a battered old Generation I Kanto-style Pokédex that was near it when it woke, Ditto meets Professor Tangrowth, who has been living alone for a long time in what appears to be the long abandoned ruins of a town or city that was once called home by both humans and Pokémon. Encouraged by Professor Tangrowth, Ditto takes it on themselves to cultivate and shape the land into the perfect habitat for Pokémon.
Ditto can collect different materials to build furniture, structures, and grow vegetables to attract other Pokémon. Once attracted, players can befriend Pokémon to learn their signature moves, such as Leafage from Bulbasaur to grow patches of grass, or Water Gun from Squirtle to water dried-up plants. Ditto can also interact with these Pokémon in various ways, such as playing games with them, enlisting their help for various tasks such as building homes, and fulfilling their requests to develop the town into a more comfortable place for everyone to live. In addition to reshaping the world around them, players will also be able to reshape their Ditto with a variety of different hairstyles and outfits.
Pokémon Pokopia also features a real-time day-night cycle, as well as weather conditions which can change the environment.
While the trailer, and accompanying press release and website update, were all somewhat light on the details, it's also clear that there will be an overarching plot of some sorts going beyond just the base motivation from Professor Tangrowth to rebuild the town. During their journey, it seems players will encounter a variety of other named Pokémon, with unique appearances and personalities. These include:
- Peakychu: A pale Pikachu with an almost ghost-like appearance, sporting drooping ears and a body that seems to have an inner glow.
- Mosslax: A sleeping Snorlax with moss grown all over its body, and a flower blooming atop its head. This Snorlax has surely been sleeping for just as long as Ditto has.
- Smearguru: A Smeargle who is even more into painting than this species usually is, using its tail as a brush. Its body is covered with a variety of paint splatters.
Up to 4 players will be able to play together in co-op. This mode will support Gameshare to allow for play together with friends who don't have the game, and even those using an original Nintendo Switch system. While it's not clear if players will be able to play through the plot together, the trailer did showcase players building a house together, meaning this co-op will at least be a bit more involved than just inviting people over to your town to have a look around.
The digital version of the game is available for pre-order now on the Nintendo eShop. The physical version of the game will be released exclusively as a Game-Key Card. Everyone who purchases the game prior to January 31st, 2027 will receive a Ditto rug item with which to decorate their in-game house. While this is being called an "early purchase bonus", we have to admit that it's a little crazy they're calling it that when the redemption period is almost a full 11 months after the game's release!
