New Johto Journey DVD Release

That is pretty cool news. I was hoping that we'd see a release date for a Johto Journeys DVD box set soon. Too bad that it won't be until November, but it's pretty cool that the season will finally be available on DVD and it will hopefully include those two episodes that were never released on VHS before.

The significant thing about Johto is that (for whatever reason) it's the one region that's not on Netflix, Hulu, iTunes or Amazon Instant. I expected based on the previous progression we'd get one of these. Hopefully next year we get JLC and Master Quest.

Now to sit back and wait for the my beloved Master Quest...

Though I really hope this leads to some digital releases too.

Probably :/ We don't have a disc count or anything but I imagine they'll try cram too many episodes onto each disc and the video will have just as many problems as all the other releases.

I already have my Australian sets which are pretty much superior to Viz's releases in every conceivable way so I'm going to pass on this.

The "whatever reason" is because the Johto DVDs that do exist are so old and have been out of print for so long that none of those services probably have access to them.

The episodes do show on Pokemon TV, so obviously they have existed in some digital form.

It's four discs according to the Amazon listing. Five or six would give better quality, but I still think four is reasonable.

According to Amazon, the Johto Journeys box-set that's coming out in November will have the season spread out over 4 DVDs. The Johto Journey's has 41 episodes (Including the 2 that were missing from the previous release.) That means that the first 3 discs will probably have 10 episodes on them and the final one will have 11.

They're making the same mistake they did with the Orange Islands box-sets. There has to be a lot of compression in order to fit them all. I'm glad they're finally releasing the older seasons on DVD and all but, why is Viz so stingy with the discs? Just make it a 6 disc box-set, which is very common, and loosen up the compression.

An example is this episode from Master Quest. The image on the left is from the 10th anniversary box-set which has three episodes per disc, while the one on the right is from the Master Quest box-set which has about 11 episodes per disc. The artifacts look terrible on modern displays. It may have been ok back when CRT TV's were standard and it was less noticeable but now, not so much. Compression is key to good quality, especially when working with older material that's not mastered digitally.

Episodes per disc is only part of the story, however. What actually matters is how much data is on the disc (even on discs with the same number of layers, there can be considerable variance), how many intermediate steps the video goes through, etc..

That doesn't mean Netflix had access to them. If Viz didn't include their old 2001 Johto Journeys DVDs along with all the other seasons then Netflix wouldn't have had any choice but to skip them. They can't stream what they don't have.

I'm soooooooo happy I got the Region 4 DVDs. Just based on Viz's track record I know that my Australian DVDs are superior to Viz's in every conceivable way.

I've thought about getting the Australian DVDs myself. Although, I'm curious, do they have blended frames or an increase in pitch like a lot of NTSC to PAL transfers do?

I don't see any problems, personally. I'd like to get that upcoming set.

You have to look fairly closely in certain areas of the picture to be able to tell-try the area around Ash's mouth (it probably helps that I'm used to looking for compression artifacts).

I saw that. I just don't see that as problems, not unless they look like super-pixelated MPEG videos from the 90s Internet.

The problem is that some of them actually do look like super-pixelated MPEG videso from the 90s Internet.

I totally get this, but compared to watching grainy episodes off some sketchy website, a box set will be fantastic in any format. I guess I'm not picky.
