Summit Entertainment’s vampire-romance sequel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” rung up a record $72.7 million in opening-day boxoffice on Friday, easily topping domestic rankings.

That bested a previous single-day boxoffice mark of $67.2 million, set by Warner Bros.’ Batman sequel “The Dark Knight” in July 2008.The first-day tally for “New Moon” included $26.3 million in boxoffice from a total 3,514 performances at12:01 a.m. Friday, which set a record for witching-hour coin.

Consensus pre-release forecasts put the likely first-weekend tally for “New Moon” at $85 million-plus. Not even a meteoric burnout on Saturday and Sunday would keep the largely female-fueled film from soaring well past those projections.

“Dark Knight” holds the record for the biggest opening ever, at $158.4 million. Whether “New Moon” – which is playing in more than 4,024 locations this weekend – will hold up well enough in its second and third days of release to approach that record is virtually unknowable, as the sequel is traveling into uncharted territory for the franchise.

The original “Twilight” – released a year ago this weekend – collected $36 million in its first day of release and $69.6 million in its first weekend. And that was considered a major over-performance at the time.

Elsewhere in the daily rankings, Warners’ Sandra Bullock-toplined drama “The Blind Side” debuted with $10.8 million, good for second place on the day. That’s a terrific start for the feel-good pigskin pic, which some thought would get blind-sided by “New Moon” and fail to rise above teen millions on the weekend.

Sony’s animated feature “Planet 51” landed in fifth place with a soft $3.2 million in first-day boxoffice. But the PG-rated pic should find a more lucrative orbit once Saturday and Sunday matinees kick in.

Sony’s scifi actioner “2012” -- which topped domestic rankings a week earlier – was third among all Friday grosses with $8.1 million. That gives the Roland Emmerich pic an $89.8 million cume through its first eight days in the marketplace.

Sad thing is that it is a terrible movie (it only has a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes). Critics such as Roger Ebert slammed the movie. I feel like I've lost faith in the people my own age.

Oh good. More money to make more horribly written stories about glittering vampires and furry pandering werewolves.

There's still hope! All the girls who are "saving themselves for Edward" remove themselves from the gene pool. And if Mayer ever wants to write another book, all we have to do is get a copy of the work in progress and post it on the internet and she'll throw a hissy fit and drop the project :D

They probably just charged a lot for the tickets this always happens.

Darwin Awards all around! Perfect!

Hmm, I once visited a friend and picked up one of her vampire books, thinking it was somekind of horror series. Before I managed to figure out what it was, I had already read several pages.

Stuff's bad for you, man. I pissed glitter for a week.

Oh god, not this movie. How did it get in the top movie list, when it is a really bad movie even worse than the already bad books?

Now, not having read the books, or watched any of the movies, (lucky me.) I really can't be a fair judge on this. But, I will say one thing. All of those Twilight fangirls (and fanboys) will look back on this in five or so years and regret/deny they were ever into it.

Nope. Her next book is about time-traveling "sirens." Quotation marks because the sirens she's using are actually mermaids (The sirens were part woman, part BIRD; it's a common misconception that they had fish tails).

Try and steer the thread back to the topic at hand, people. I closed one Twilight thread because it just became non-stop bashing and not actual discussion, and I've got no problem closing another.

I'm not a Twilight fan, either. And I'm not happy with it beating Dark Knight...but something will knock it off the top spot eventually. I'm just hoping it's another comic book movie. But, hey, I'm biased.

Good news is that it probably won't reach The Dark Knight's sales.

Think that maybe Iron Man 2's got a shot?

I'm hoping. Really depends on what else comes out next year. I'm sure the next Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean (I thought I heard they were making another one, anyway...) will both have good shots at it (whenever they come out).

I actually loved the movie I actually thought it was pritty good. I'm willing to watch it all the time. I care less for the books but I love how it was made I rate it a 9/10. I forget there was something I didn't like but over all it was a great movie.

but that's my opinion I'm sure there's others that loved it out there.

Actually, now that I think about, there's one movie that could top even those. Toy Story 3. I mean, there's going to be a heck of a turn out for that movie.

Oh like we haven't seen brooding vampires before in television and movies..... Twilight has its market, and though its annoying in some respects, fans are loyal to the series.
