Nintendo Direct surprised me today with the upcoming release of a new Paper Mario game.

From Nintendo Direct: "In Paper Mario Color Splash, the theme is colors and paint. The game takes place in a colorful paradise called prism island, but something is very wrong. Prism island is being drained from its color. It's up to Paper Mario to do like he does and set off on a journey to bring color back to the land."

What do people think about this? As a kid I loved the Paper Mario series, especially the first two games which I still play occasionally, but if Color Splash is more like Sticker Star than the first two RPGs then I'll be less willing to pay for it. I'm still hoping for a pleasant surprise as we still know very little about the game so far.

From the looks of the trailer, it looks like its using Stinker Star's gimmick again, and my feelings of that game are seriously irate, so.... yeah, unless it tries to go back to it's older roots, I'm not interested.

also pls bring back dimentio or doopliss

I agree.

This is 3DS I assume? Super Paper Mario was the last game of the series I played. Granted, I love the first trilogy, but didn't enjoy the direction of Sticker Star, so I never picked it up.

It's for the Wii U.

This series is so sad now. Like I get they want to experiment with new ideas, but please don't use a beloved series to do so with. You'd think that they would have heard the complaints after Sticker Star, but nope. And it's such a shame, cause it's so pretty.

I'll probably play it. And hopefully it'll be a good game. But I have no confidence at all that it'll be a good Paper Mario game.

I need to catch up on the Mario RPGs; I haven't finished Sticker Star (and I probably won't, honestly), and I haven't even picked up M&L Dream Team, which I have heard great things about, or Paper Jam, which I have heard nothing about. So I probably won't be playing this game for a while, and it's going to take a lot more information to get me actually interested in this game in general.

This game reminds me of Splatoon.

I can't see the game being all that good. It gives me the feeling that it's like Sticker Star, even though I never played it.

I am open to anything Nintendo throws at us, I can truly say that I am a sucker for anything. Hell, I've actually played and enjoyed sticker star. But man do I wish that they would go back to the roots, even ifthey likely don't because of the Mario and Luigi series being RPGS. Anway, everything Mario has been bigger and better when going from 3DS to Wii U so far, so its likely we could be seeing a 3DLand to 3D World scenario.

Digging up this thread again after the Treehouse Live coverage of it.

I no longer have any confidence in this game whatsoever. All of the problems I had with Sticker Star are still there and has absolutely no redeeming qualities for me. It looks like they didn't even attempt to fix any problems. The Big Bad is going to be Bowser and the Paint Can (which is going to be literally the only new character) is going to sacrifice it self to beat Bowser. But it won't be all bad because the paint can will magically come back because this game can't ever be sad or have a moment of actual depth.

I won't be buying this.

Did Japan enjoy Sticker Star? Maybe that's why they kept them in.

After some searching, I found out that Japanese players were also angry over Color Splash refusing to learn from criticisms. Glad to see it isn't a case of them liking something we hate, in the case of Tingle.

From the looks of interviews the development of this game started at the Sticker Star wrap party. So they really didn't stop to see how the reaction to Sticker Star was. It also doesn't help that Sticker Star is the best selling game in the series and it was pretty well recived critically. They also have this dumb idea that (classic) Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi can't exist at the same time. And that sucks because while Mario & Luigi is a great series (Paper Jam was a souless, generic mess) it can't replace Paper Mario to me. They are similar in but different enough to me at least to thing that the Mario series can have 2 RPGs at a time, ecspecially if they make Paper Mario return being exclusive to home consoles while Mario & Luigi remain handheld exclusive.

I enjoyed Paper Jam. :/

Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter *cough cough*

I couldn't really enjoy Sticker Star (didn't get very far though) even though it was cute an' all. I probably won't follow the series as a whole but I hope they're more receptive to criticisms.

I think we have Club Nintendo's survey to blame for Sticker Star's existence, as 1% liked the story of Super Paper Mario. Though I'm PRETTY sure it's mainly because people were rushing through surveys to get those sweet, shiny Coins to buy apparel and stuff.

It's amazing to see a Paper Mario game as divided as this one is. Certainly, this game is followed by the already controversial Sticker Star, which did not help matters. In fact, if fan opinion is based on Youtube ratings, you will see that there is a lot of negatives on the Paper Mario Colour Splash videos. It is amazing that so many people wanted the direction of Paper Mario as an RPG with original characters a lot, and I can understand that, since Thousand Year Door made a very strong impression.

In any case, I am still looking forward to this game, because apart from having a very strong sense of style in its visuals, the areas in the world look fully realised than ever. Considering that I never played Sticker Star before, I think it's good to experience this version of Paper Mario. I trust that the developers fix some of the issues that made Sticker Star unrewarding.

On other news, I am kinda sad to see that for the interview with Risa Tabata (the co-producer of the game), several commenters are already wishing ill on her.

Thanks for reading.

Sticker Star is basically the Gates to Infinity of the Paper Mario series, the one sequel that tried to experiment and subsequently got panned. If they're seriously not listening to the criticisms of the previous game then I'm definitely gonna pass on this and wait for the next Mario and Luigi title.
