Hi everyone,

I recently started playing Pokemon again and was at a convention trying to compete with my Platinum version but didn't come close to the competition. I also found out then that certain pokemon on my team weren't allowed to be fielded (ie: Garchomp, Zapdos) so I had a handicap of 4 pokemon that day for my team.

Anyhow, after getting a taste of what the competition was like I decided to go back to my roots and build one of my first teams ever for Heart Gold and Soul Silver and try to compete again next year.

So here's the team I plan on building (or re-building rather):

Dugtrio (Jolly) 252 Atk / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Arena Trap (Focus Band)

Earthquake
Sucker Punch
Stone-Edge
Stealth Rock

I figure Dugtrio should be fast enough to set up Stealth Rock. The Arena Trap would allow me to switch with relative ease to another Pokemon. Earthquake for STAB damage, Sucker Punch for a priority move and Stone-Edge to cover Flying types.

Alakazam (Modest) 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Synchronize (Life Orb)

Psychic
Focus Blast
Thunder Wave
Recover

Paralysis Support and some Special Sweeping potential. I imagine Recover and Life Orb would be beneficial. Psychic For STAB, focus Blast to cover Dark and Steel types. Recover to off-set self-inflicted damage from Life Orb as well as contribute more to survivability.

Raichu (Timid) 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Static (Enigma Berry)

Thunderbolt
Grass Knot
Thunder Wave
Wish

Paralysis Support and Wish. Thunderbolt for STAB and Grass Knot to cover its weakness. Wish, to provide healing for group used in conjunction with paralysis support.

Flareon (Sassy) 252 HP / 130 SpA / 126 SpD
Flash Fire (Expert Belt)

Fire Blast
Superpower
Shadow Ball
Heal Bell

Heal Beller and have a mixed attacker. Fire Blast for STAB, Superpower to deal with Rock types, Shadow Ball, since its the only other special attack it could learn with a type.

Blastoise (Bold) 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Torrent (Leftovers)

Muddy Water
Ice Beam
Rapid Spin
Yawn/Haze

Rapid Spinner, and use Yawn to provide sleep ailment in case there is a switch-in. Possibly Haze instead, depending on the the importance of one over another. Muddy Water for STAB and accuracy decrease, Ice beam to over Dragon and Grass types.

Machamp (Adamant) 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe
No Guard (Chesto Berry)

Dynamic Punch
Payback
Stone Edge
Rest

Physical sweeper with Rest to replenish health. Chesto Berry and Heal Bell could make that useful. Dynamic Punch to use in conjunction with No Guard. Payback for Psychic types, Stone Edge for flyers.

This team needs major changes
Firstly it will help us if you tell us what you think/want each pokemon to do.
That will help us decide what to replace with what well.

Also, this is a UU team with the exception of Machamp. Either get rid of Machamp for something like Hitmonlee, or you are going to have a hard time in the standard game.

So here's the team I plan on building (or re-building rather):

Dugtrio (Jolly) 252 Atk / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Arena Trap (Micle Berry)

Earthquake
Sucker Punch
Fissure
Stealth Rock

Alakazam (Modest) 252 SpA / 40 HP / 216 Spe
Synchronize (Life Orb)

Psychic
Focus Blast
Thunder Wave
Recover

My comments shall be in blue. No HP EVs on Zam. EVER. It's just not going to take a hit, investing in HP is a waste. Also, max speed and go with timid, you need to be able to out speed stuff when using Zam.

Raichu (Timid) 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Static (Expert Belt)

Thunderbolt
Grass Knot
Thunder Wave
Wish

Flareon (Sassy) 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Flash Fire (Enigma Berry)

Fire Blast
Superpower
Trump Card
Heal Bell

Blastoise (Bold) 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Torrent (Leftovers)

Muddy Water
Ice Beam
Rapid Spin
Yawn

Surf is more reliable.

Machamp (Adamant) 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe
No Guard (Quick Claw)

Dynamic Punch
Payback
Stone Edge
Rest

Don't use a luck based item. Also, Machamp is OU, the rest of your team is UU, you might want to go with Hitmonlee so you can compete in UU.

OHKO moves like fissure are banned in competitive play. Change it to stone edge on dugtrio

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'll try and reply to each one.

Also, this is a UU team with the exception of Machamp. Either get rid of Machamp for something like Hitmonlee, or you are going to have a hard time in the standard game.

I'm not clear what UU or OU stands for, I thought it was a classification like "Over-used, or "Under-used" as to which pokemon tend to be more popular. I would really prefer not replacing Machamp since it's I've had this line up since Red/Blue. I'm hoping to give this team a try within the standard game I guess?

My comments shall be in blue. No HP EVs on Zam. EVER. It's just not going to take a hit, investing in HP is a waste. Also, max speed and go with timid, you need to be able to out speed stuff when using Zam.

I thought about that. I actually saw this distribution on a Smogon article and used that. But I can understand your point. I'll look into that again. As for the nature, I figure Alakazam should be fast enough to not need Timid since there are two paralysis support pokemon.

Surf is more reliable.

Really chose Muddy Water for it's secondary effect.

Don't use a luck based item. Also, Machamp is OU, the rest of your team is UU, you might want to go with Hitmonlee so you can compete in UU.

What item would you recommend, and if item clause was in place, what should go into this?

OHKO moves like fissure are banned in competitive play. Change it to stone edge on dugtrio

That's a pity but understandable, I'll rectify that.

I'd make alakazam pure offense, it can't take a hit.
get some sprites here. (click on the mountain picture, and copy + paste the url).
also, defiately use surf or water spout on blastoise. Raichu also can never take a hit. NEVER!
also, use technitop over machamp.
TechniTop
Life Orb / Leftovers Technician Adamant
Moveset
~ Fake Out
~ Close Combat / Revenge
~ Mach Punch
~ Bullet Punch / Stone Edge
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

overall, best first team I've seen.

Dugtrio (Jolly) 252 Atk / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Arena Trap (Focus Band)

Earthquake
Sucker Punch
Stone-Edge
Stealth Rock

Interesting idea, using Dugtrio for a lead. But go with Focus Sash over Band. Focus Band only gives you a 10% chance to survive any hit, whereas Sash guarantees you one hit (as long as you have taken no residual damage - which is why it is only used on leads). This way you will always set up Stealth Rock.

Raichu (Timid) 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Static (Enigma Berry)

Thunderbolt
Grass Knot
Thunder Wave
Wish

Enigma Berry is a terrible item. If you want to be defensive, go with Leftovers instead. Although honestly, there are much better clerics out there than Raichu with its terrible stats. You could always switch to something standard like Blissey, or something a little cooler like Celebi, Togekiss or Clefable. I'm not really taking type synergy into consideration here yet, as I bet a lot of this team will end up being revamped.

What item would you recommend, and if item clause was in place, what should go into this?

You could go with life orb, but if you're playing with the item clause I'd say take out rest and give it a chioce band.

Dugtrio (Jolly) 252 Atk / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Arena Trap (Focus Sash)

Psychic
Focus Blast
Hidden Power Fire
Recover

Paralysis Support and some Special Sweeping potential. I imagine Recover and Life Orb would be beneficial. Psychic For STAB, Focus Blast to cover Dark and Steel types. Recover to off-set self-inflicted damage from Life Orb as well as contribute more to survivability.

Raichu (Impish) 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Static (Life Orb)

Volt Tackle
Reversal
Thunder Wave
Encore

Paralysis Support and Wish. Volt-Tackle for STAB. Reversal since it's likely he'll be taking loads of damage.

Flareon (Brave) 252 HP / 130 SpA / 126 SpD
Flash Fire (White Herb)

Lava Plume
Superpower
Shadow Ball
Yawn

Mixed attacker Lava Plume for STAB and 30% chance to Burn, Superpower to deal with Rock types, Shadow Ball, since its the only other special attack it could learn with a type.

Blastoise (Bold) 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Torrent (Leftovers)

Surf
Ice Beam
Earthquake
Rapid Spin

Rapid Spinner, and use Yawn to provide sleep ailment in case there is a switch-in. Surf for STAB, Earthquake for Electrics, Ice beam to cover Dragon and Grass types.
