I've just discovered this whole community and it's pretty intense, I must say. Was just wondering if anyone could take a look at my team and offer suggestions:

Gallade:
Adamant - Life Orb
- Psycho Cut
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Rock Slide (Leaving this for now since I don't have Platinum)
Ice Punch

Umbreon:
Sassy - Leftovers
- Curse
- Payback
- Protect
- Wish

Crobat:
Jolly - Leftovers
- Hypnosis
- Taunt
- U-Turn
- Aerial Ace

Politoed:
Calm - Leftovers
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Hypnosis
- Refresh

Scizor:
Adamant - Choice Band
- Superpower
- Night Slash
- U-Turn
- Metal Claw (Again, leaving it)
Bullet Punch

Houndoom:
Timid - Life Orb
- Flamethrower
- Dark Pulse
- Nasty Plot
- Will-O-Wisp

Any thoughts appreciated!
Thanks

Depends. What is this team going to be used for?

Well, I've been checking out these level 100 battles on Youtube that look pretty epic, and I wanted to try my hand at that. I'm not sure exactly where people get all these friend codes to challenge people, and whether or not they leveled all those Pokemon up to 100...

Looking at those videos, it seemed kind of lame that everyone was using the same ten or fifteen Pokemon, so I thought I would make one that felt a little unique.

I'll just give moveset/nature/item advice for now, until your team is more developed.

Gallade: Rock Slide --> Ice Punch (Platinum tutor), Adamant, Life Orb

Umbreon: Curse/Payback/Wish/Protect (Interesting set that I'm still trying to breed for. Curse and Wish are Egg moves.), Sassy, Leftovers

Crobat: Hypnosis/Taunt/U-Turn/Aerial Ace, Jolly, Leftovers (This will make a good lead)

Politoed: Surf/Hypnosis/Refresh/Ice Beam, Calm, Leftovers

Scizor: Bullet Punch (Platinum tutor)/U-Turn/Superpower/Pursuit (Pursuit can be swapped for Night Slash since you're just beginning), Adamant, Choice Band

Houndoom: Nasty Plot/Flamethrower/Dark Pulse/Hidden Power Fighting (HP Fighting will be hard to get, so you can just use Will-O-Wisp), Timid, Life Orb

If there are any movesets you don't like, follow the link below and look for others that you like better

Once you get the first post edited, we can help you with EV spreads and basic team building.

Well, I hadn't planned on getting Platinum, but it looks like that move tutor is essential. Do you think I could do some of the moves differently for now with just my Pearl version?

EDIT: If anyone is generous enough, could I possibly trade you a Pokemon to your Platinum with a Heart Scale to train these moves that I can't currently obtain?

Also, I saw somewhere that you can set the Wi-Fi battles to make your Pokemon level 100 and base their level 100 stats on their nature. Is this why certain natures are preferred for certain Pokemon?

I could probably tutor what you need, but trust me dude, Platinum is worth the investment :)

The natures are to help the Pokémon. Just take Gallade for example. It's using its Attack stat, but not using its Special Attack, so let's use Adamant nature to boost its Attack while dropping a stat that it doesn't use. Make sense?

So pretty much, you just choose a "class" for a certain Pokemon, and tailor its stats accordingly?

If you want to call it "class", then yes. As of right now, I can think of two main "classes": attacker and wall. Those break down into smaller "classes", like physical, special, and mixed attackers, and physical and special walls. Plus there's other smaller groups, like clerics (things that can heal status problems on your team via Aromatherapy/Heal Bell), ToxicStallers (things that are bulky and know Toxic; they can usually stay alive long enough for their opponent to die of Poison), and hazers/phazers (things that can eliminate status increases via Haze (hazer) or Roar/Whirlwind (phazers- pseudo hazers)). The way to classify a Pokémon is not only by its stats, but its movepool as well. It's a lot to consider.

Sounds like a lot of fine tuning for sure!

On a separate note, I've just hatched a Timid Houndour. Now there was something about EV's I had to consider too? How can I tell if it's the right one to start raising?

EVs are added anytime. It's the IVs that matter on hatching and cannot be changed (though there are ways to influence them with Ditto breeding...).

Well you influence IVs whenever you breed whether you mean to or not. There is a very good chance at least one IV from at least one parent is going to pass down to the offspring. It's getting good IVs/IVs for Hidden Power that's difficult. My most recent Hidden Power breed was a 20/31/4/31/23/31 Hasty Infernape with HP Ice 66. That took... about a month if you count up all the times I tried. Since you're just starting out, I wouldn't worry about any Hidden Powers yet. Just focus on decent IVs (Make sure your sweepers at least have 31 Speed, your bulky things have 31 HP, etc).

So EV's are the values which I add by training on certain Pokemon and using Power items while I train, and IV's are some base trait of each Pokemon when it hatches?

Is there some optimal IV that I should shoot for?

To the first part: Yes.

To the second: It depends on the Pokemon. For, say, Crobat, nothing special... maybe 20/31/20/x/20/31 or so (since you're just starting out). If you take something like Houndoom, then it starts depending on Hidden Power. If you don't want it, then go for something like 20/x/20/31/20/31. If you do... at the moment Hidden Power Fighting comes to mind, and the max for that is 31/30/30/30/30/30 (That can go down to something like 23/10/22/30/22/30). Notice however that for a good Hidden Power, you lose a point of speed. That may not seem like much, but it can make you lose to what you would usually tie with as far as speed. Let's say it's a Hidden Power Fighting Houndoom (30 Speed) vs a 31 Speed IV Jynx. Both have +Speed natures and both have the same base Speed (95). If your Houndoom DIDN'T have Hidden Power Fighting, it would be able to at least tie with that Jynx. Since it doesn't, you're going to lose the speed race to it. However, this isn't TOO much of a problem, seeing as many things that Houndoom would go up against aren't base 95 anyway.

Like I said, don't worry about Hidden Power just yet. Wait until you get some more breeding experience first.

Well, what are the odds a Jynx is going to stay in on a Houndoom :p

So those values you listed there, I presume they are Health, Attack, Defense, etc.

At what level are those stats determined?
i.e. When do I look to see if I have numbers that I like?

Outrage it was just an example sheesh lol

Warpath: I use the standard order- HP/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe. The stats are determined at level 1. When you can CALCULATE those stats depends on whether or not you have an Action Replay/GameShark really. If you do then you can calculate them whenever but if you don't then you'll have to level up with Rare Candies. Metalkid's IV calculator is best for that. You enter in the stats at level one, level up with a candy, then enter in the stats at level two... in fact if you use this method, you'll have close results at level 10.

http://www.metalkid.info/pokemon/OnlineProgram/Calculators/IV.aspx << That's the link to the calculator.

Can I not level them up in battle, or would that "taint" the results with the EV's?

You can, but you would have to keep up with what EVs you get. You could probably just do the standard switch/switch out with a trainer around the Fight Area. Just use the Vs. Seeker, put the Pokémon you're checking up front, and switch out on the first turn. Then, you wouldn't have enough EVs to make a difference to the results (4 EVs = 1 point, so if you have 3 or less it won't do anything). Just keep up with what stats are there at each level.

Awesome, sounds easy enough.

I've seen something about a solid number for an IV at 10 being 31? Is there something special about the IV being that number?

And I'm sorry if I'm just barraging you with questions, but I'm completely new to this kind of preparation before training a Pokemon...

Something special about the IV being 31? 31 is the maximum number an IV can be. If you're talking about level 10, then putting all the stat sets in from levels 1 to 10 into the calculator will give you a close range of what your stats are, and if you do have any 31s, they should show up as 28-31s or something like that.

This could all go into simple questions but I'm too tired to care about that right now lol. I'm off to bed.
