The Silver Screen X-Men are about to get a bit younger.

This according to an article posted this evening on Variety which states that 20th Century Fox has tapped Josh Schwartz, the creator of “Gossip Girl,” “The OC” and “Chuck,” to write and potentially direct a reboot of the X-Men movie franchise under the name “X-Men: First Class.”

Details of the new production are limited at this hour, but according to the report, Fox has been leaning towards a retooling of the franchise using younger versions of the characters introduced in the previous X-Men films, along the lines of those featured in the Marvel Comics series also called “X-Men: First Class."

This move follows the $1.2 Billion dollar success of the first three X-Men films. “X-Men” (2000) and “X2” (2003) were directed by Bryan Singer. “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006) was directed by Brett Ratner.

No specific date has been announced for the release of “X-Men: First Class,” although it’s expected sometime in 2010. Mutant fans won’t have to wait long to get their next fix, though, as May 2009 sees the release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” featuring Hugh Jackman in the role he originated in the first three X-Men films. Fox is also developing a stand-alone Magneto feature as well as considering a Deadpool spinoff starring Ryan Reynolds, following the character’s debut in “Wolverine.”

I definitely don't like the idea of a reboot. If anything, they should be developing some of the younger mutants that were around. Maybe base a film on the New Mutants series from earlier this decade that spun into the New X-Men title.

The sad thing is, I would totally kill for a New Mutants / Generation X / New X-men / Young X-men crossover title that put all the younger students that have been at Xaviers' into the same class.

X-men Evolution the Movie? Not so much.

Yeah. It was fine as an animated series, but unless this is going to be closer to the original comics...it seems a bit unnecessary. It's not like when Hulk needed a reboot. The X-Men movies were all successes. They weren't perfect, but they were pretty good. Doing a teen drama version just...can't end well.

Revealed? I thought this has been common knowledge for months.

*is an arrogant asshat* :D

Anyway, I dislike the idea of a new X-Men movie continuity. X-Men 3 wasn't all that good, and reports of the Wolverine script have allegedly said it's not that great (which I really hope turns out to be not true), but yeah... no need for reboots.

I do like the idea of a prologue to X-Men 1, though. One with a small-scale story (possibly involving Xavier's and Magneto's falling out?) with focus on the characters. I want to see Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver at least, assuming they can be used and no Avengers movie deal of some sort would prevent that.

IS IT common knowledge? I know there's been talk of a younger mutant film. And numerous other spin-offs, but I've never heard about a possible reboot.

X-Men Origins: Magneto's going to deal with the early Magneto/Xavier days. Would have KILLED for it to be more of an X-Men: Magneto Testament-based movie, though.

Well, not a reboot, but a prequel called X-Men: First Class... Wikipedia references'd!

In any case, this is the first official confirmation, so yay. Assuming this is any good, that is.

Yes, please.

Gah, Fox is killing me. The first 3 were fine. They weren't GREAT, they were no Dark Knight Iron Man or Spider-man, but they were good.

I wish Marvel could take the rights back, becuase obviously they get people that know what they're doing.

And Gossip Girl and The O.C. is /=/ Marvel.
I could see a live action teen drama TV series with the young mutants, but a movie would suck.

Gah I really don't like fox
