I think Ash Greninja looks more like a mega evolution
it looks REALLY,REALLY different

"Plus, Ash’s Greninja takes on a mysterious new appearance in the latest season! Ash-Greninja is the form that Greninja takes when the bond between it and Ash is raised to the limit. The strength of their bond changes Greninja’s appearance, and it takes on the characteristic look of Ash’s attire. Now I wondered does that mean the Pokemon Z game will finally have the real Mega Greninja, or even Mega Chesnaught and Mega Delphox. If you tell me that is the anime-only thing and is specifically made for Ash-only, that just somehow unforgivable.

It's probably some new mechanism from the next game which may be tied to customization.

And it's not exactly a Mega Greninja given that, apparently, no Mega Stone/Key Stone is required.

I don't understand the reason of existence of this gimmick.

No idea.

It is also possible that the writers just didn't want Ash with a key stone for whatever reason and decided to give him this instead.

So yeah, a pseudo-Mega Evolution.
