Has anyone else noticed that through the generations, the pokemon have just been getting weirder and weirder? Some in Black and white and even Pearl and diamond are just very strange and just not like the old ones at all.

So what do you think? Do you agree with this? If so, do you think they will keep going down this road?

Oh, and I am not saying all are weird, but with every generation, the percentage goes way up imo.

I agree that they get weird, take Rhyperior and PorygonZ for example. But they get weird in a good way.

Because most of the Gen I pokemon were normal animals with a touch of fantasy. Its only in the later Gens, ie, since III that the Pokemon got 'creative.'

I guess people can call them "weird" if they want, but they're getting better and better IMO.

I rather enjoy the design the of the newer generations, but Gen I/II definitely are still my favorite.

Lates just thank the designers still have enough "creativity" to still make pokemon that have their roots in real life animals/myths. It could be worse, they could start using inanimate objects.

It was said in Masuda's blog or an interview that the newer Pokémon were purposely designed to illect this exact reaction.

"Is that supposed to be a Pokémon?".

Thanks for a ll of the opinions so far, I like seeing how other people think about this!

In my opinion, Pokemon really are getting "weirder" as time goes by, and as new generations are introduced, like some of you have already said, some of this "weirdness" or creativity can be seen as good, but I'm also afraid that, with every generation, the number of bad Pokemon (in terms of.. creativity) is getting bigger. Rotom? The original form looks sort of nice, but some of its variations are a bit ridiculous, in my opinion.

There are three options for Yes and one for No. Leading question much?

They're getting weirder, some for the better and some for the worse. A lot of the ones with interesting with connections to real life myths and creatures are amazing, but then you get things like Rhyphailure.

I think pokemon is more of covering a more vast array of designs than they are "getting weirder." I mean, looking for the most abstract design in the first generation, maybe Kabutops? That's an odd one but compared to what's out nowadays, it's not really anything to bat an eye at.

But looking from the more dull pokemon early on, take Persian for instance-if you put Glameow next to it I wouldn't have to second guess that they came from a similar designer. But put Persian next to Garchomp or Drapion? I start to get doubtful.

But if they stuck with simplistic designs, I feel these games would get dull rather quick and there wouldn't be abstract typings like given to Froslass and Shedinja.

I don't care about the new Gen V Pokemon getting weirder each generation. The new designs seem...interesting

porygonZ in agood way maybe..but rhyperior?

and yes their getting weirder.. we will not get any of the simpler designed ones (which are better) like diglett...I mean, what's up with gothic lolita and green cell thingy anyway?
sigh..
but atleast I hope there would be better pokémon in gen V..

You mean like the one based off of a Sarcophagus?

I'm fine with new pokemon. I like them more than the older ones. If you don't like them, then don't buy the games. You'll never have to see them again.

I never noticed that each passing generation gave us weirder Pokemon, but I actually think they are getting more unique. I actually liked all of them, especially the newer ones, because not every Pokemon adhere to some design standards like colour equates type and detailed appearances. I think this will give fans a wider perspective on how a Pokemon is made, and I am guessing that as more Pokemon appear, there will be lesser and lesser people thinking Pokemon looks like Digimon (an opinion I detest). As a previous poster said, Pokemon was designed to astonish us for a second, but I guess it is what makes them memorable in the first place.
