And it only took them a decade. For some reason, most of the advertising is being aimed at European markets right now . . .

Nice new outfit. Even if s/he looks fruity. I'm just really interested to find out if it'll be in 3D or 2D.

A...German? magazine revealing it first exclusively...

I'm very very very very suspicious...especially as this is the APRIL issue...>.>

It's been confirmed by two other European magazines as well - including teasers in the Official Nintendo Magazine for Europe. Plus Sega is starting to have NiGHTs series polls on the official Sega website.

And April Fool's day pranks usually aren't cover stories. This also happens to coincide with Yuji Naka leaving Sega. Naka created the series, but was the chief reason why a sequel was never made.

Sweet I remember seeing the first one and liked it alot.

I dunno. Sonic and the Secret Rings was pretty great. And Naka's been with Sega for a while, and still managed to screw up Heroes. The first NiGHTS was overated in my opinion anyways. It was decent, but not fantastic. I only really loved the art and character design, but I wasn't terribly impressed by the actual gameplay.

You do realise that the reason every Sonic game since Sonic and Knuckles has either been distinctly average or on the whole absolutely rubbish is 100% Yuji Naka's direction, right?

Look at Sonic and the Secret Rings - the first Sonic game developed since he buggered off - it's got a bit of a lame plot but it's one of the best installments in the series (if not an all-together serious installment) since the 90s.

Naka got away with his gimmicks with Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles because the systems were cheaper and easier to design for. He failed utterly miserably when forced to adapt to a third dimension and a new era of gameplay (importance on plot, more need for different styles of gameplay, etc). He obviously knew this himself, which is why he refused to ever do a new Nights - he knew he'd ruin the quality of the original.

Now he's buggered off, Sega have (quite rightly) decided that it's high-time to bring out a new game and do it the justice that Naka could never have possibly done himself.

Yeah, Naka ran out of steam years ago - which is pretty much the reason everyone thinks he refused to do a NiGHTS 2. Especially after Oshima left the team. He basically came up with gimmicks for the game and then let his assistants and underlings do the job for him.

Sonic and the Secret of the Rings, is a good game, but still fails in comparison of the older games, or even the likes of Sonic Adventure or Sonic Rush. (Though, I'll be honest, I know its because SEGA didn't give the budget or time to allow them to do more) To be fair, Prope is still basically owned by sega, but he has enough ownership and control over it to do more of what he wants.

For the most part, every game that has to do with him has lately been merely produced by him (with my knowledge). The main reason why I worry is because SEGA has been known to take cheap cash-ins now that they are a big publisher. (Not that they weren't before but how they advertise themselves) I'm not sure if it was ever officially stated, but I'm also pretty sure that Naka had not been getting the control he wanted since dreamcast's era and wanted to leave.

Breaking up their studios was the worst thing that could ever happen to its fans. Even Nintendo fans may hurt because we got the awesome F-ZERO GX/AX that was made from AM2. I just wish SEGA re-organized some of their groups back like smilebit, AM2, and even the original Sonic Team. It would help with their image.

I hope it's okay, and part of the upset is that Naka had a large influence on me growing up (being one of my childhood heroes)

Naka never had as much involvement in his games as many other big-name producers, like Miyamoto, though. He didn't do character designs, he didn't do level designs. At most, he programmed some of the original four games and supervised and sometimes came up with a couple of basic concepts.

EDIT: Couple of other sources:

If this is an April Fool's joke, they've apparently got 4 or 5 different news sources all cooperating with eachother.

I don't think it's an april fools joke, I know other countries that celebrate that day (besides US) but how many actually do pranks in a professional situation like this also? (I guess one could imply that the person who made the post at NEOgaf) could have. Also it seems like its a lot of effort to design a new costume just to make a fake for April fools... (but some people just don't have better things to do)

ONM have specifically said that it's not an april fool's joke.
