Did you think that the 3DS price at launch was a bit too steep? Well, so do Nintendo, it seems!

From 12th August; Nintendo are launching a global cut in the price of their latest console (and quite a substantial one at that). The new prices will be 15,000 yen (Japan), $170 (US), $249.99 (AU) and although an EU price hasn't been confirmed, it is said to be 2 thirds of the original price (So that could mean £150 for the UK).

However, for those who feel cheated about buying a 3DS before this date, don't worry, Nintendo have you covered too! With the "Nintendo Ambassador Programme". Basically, if anyone goes on the Nintendo eShop before 11th August, they will be automatically eligible for the programme, which promises the download of 10 NES games and 10 Gameboy Advance games for the Virtual Console - for free. The former will be available for regular users at a charge, but there are currently no plans to release the GBA titles to the general public.

As for what games will be made available; we know five titles from each category:
NES:
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • The Legend of Zelda
All the NES titles will be available from 1st September.

GBA:
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
  • Mario Kart: Super Circuit
  • Metroid Fusion
  • WarioWare Inc.: Minigame Mania
  • Mario vs Donkey Kong
The GBA titles will be available by the end of the year.

The Official Nintendo Magazine (UK) listed "Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3" as a title instead of Super Mario Advance 3, which is named on the Nintendo of Europe press release, so it is unknown if that was made in error, or if Super Mario Advance 4 will be available.

Also, in the same press release, Nintendo confirmed the names of two upcoming 3DS titles: Super Mario 3D is now Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 3D is now Mario Kart 7. The former will be out in November in the United States, and the latter in December.

The official press release from Nintendo of Europe can be read here:
Nintendo has today announced a global change in the trade pricing policy of Nintendo 3DS. In Europe, this will be applicable from August 12th.

There have been times in the past when we, Nintendo, have marked down the trade prices for our video game machines a certain amount of time after launch to further accelerate adoption of the hardware, but never in Nintendo’s history have we dropped a system’s trade price so significantly less than 6 months after launch.

We are aware this may cause you, the loyal fans who supported Nintendo 3DS from the beginning, to lose trust in us, and this is not our intention in any way.

All of you who have kindly supported Nintendo 3DS from the beginning are Nintendo’s most important customers. Although we may not be able to completely prevent you from regretting purchasing Nintendo 3DS early, we would like to express our gratitude to our special customers like you by offering 20 free downloadable games from Nintendo eShop.

These free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 23:59 pm (Central European Time) on August 11th. These Nintendo 3DS systems will be automatically registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador programme. For information and a tutorial video on how to connect your Nintendo 3DS to the Internet, please visit the Nintendo 3DS website here.

The programme contains two elements:

1.Beginning Sept. 1st, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in Nintendo eShop for the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, will be released as paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors can download them in advance of launch for free. Once the paid versions of the games are released in Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Minigame Mania and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on Nintendo 3DS in the future.

More details about this programme will be announced in the future.

My purchase of the 3DS has been vindicated!

And hell yeah, GBA games!

Well, well, well, looks like I bought my 3DS at the right time! What can beat 20 free games, and especially Yoshi's Island! I played that one like no tomorrow as a kid back in the GBA days. I'm all set to relieve that!

Good free games
but what are Nintendo thinking Super Mario 3D land and Mario Kart 7
The Tittles was okay in the first place
Mario Kart 7 is the 8th Main game so why is it called 7?
It would be better to called it Mario Kart 3DS and Super Mario Land

Aaaaand this might make me get a 3ds too. They HAD to do it to compete against the Vita.

Mario Kart 7 is the 7th game (excluding the arcade games):

Super Mario Kart - SNES
Mario Kart 64 - N64
Mario Kart: Super Circuit - Gameboy Advance
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! - Gamecube
Mario Kart DS - DS
Mario Kart Wii - Wii
Mario Kart 7 - 3DS

NICE!

Well, I've already played most of the listed games, so this just means that I'm definitely going to buy a 3DS. It's a really nice price drop for so early in the console's lifespan, and my old DS has been in need of replacing for some time, anyway.

HELL YES!!!!

Going hungry for six months is paying off! 10 free game downloads!

Maybe I'll buy one now. I want to play Super Street Fighter IV and I don't have one of the home consoles, and now more games will be released. I can't help but wonder if Nintendo's going to release a version of the 3DS with hardware upgrades some time in the near future (probably not since there was no announcement at E3 about any upgrades).

Nintendo of America said:
Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the suggested retail price of its portable Nintendo 3DS™ system to $169.99 in the United States. The new price takes effect Aug. 12 and makes an outstanding value even better.

>.>

It even says that in the "Canadian" version of their website.

Fail.

In any case, there's no way they're dropping it in the US and not Canada unless they don't want to make any sales here.

I'm surprised they dropped it so soon, but good news nonetheless. makes me enjoy my 3DS even more.

This is what the 3DS needed. The price was just too high (at least for my standards), and some free games will surely sweeten the deal. I'll definitely be purchasing a 3DS.

The reason they did it so soon is because the 3DS has had poor sales. This is also part of a plan for success in the holiday season (i.e. a plan to compete with the PS Vita).

I was surprised by how much it was, originally. I always remember Nintendo's products being of high quality, but at a fair price.

Oh HELL YES. August 12, right? That means I can buy one just before I leave from where I am!

But do I want it...
