Hey so I'm planning on buying Pokemon Soul Silver.

The last Pokemon games I bought were Silver and Crystal A LONG time ago.

I don't have a Nintendo DS yet (though planning on buying one soon).

My question is this.

Which version should I buy? and what's the difference (if any)?

Nintendo DSi
Nintendo DS Lite
Nintendo DSi XL (apparently the newest)

Also does any extra stuff come included with the console I buy or do I have to buy these things separately?

(sorry for being a noob :spin:)

The DS Lite would be the cheapest and best option if you wanted to trade with Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red or Leaf Green, but since the last game you bought was Crystal you don't need that. The Nintendo DSi is a good choice because it has built in cameras and you can download games... also brighter screens. The DSi XL is marketed towards the elderly crowd, as it is gigantic and has huge screens. It has the same features but almost costs as much as a Wii and enough over the DSi that you'd be better off to just get a DSi.

With any of them, bought new, you will get an extra stylus, a charger, and instructions. Cases, fancy styluses, etc. are sold separately. If you purchase HG or SS that comes with the Pokewalker, so all you need for full enjoyment is a working wireless router. If you don't, you can try to find a (glitchy) old accessory Nintendo made that broadcasts hardwired internet into a wireless signal for the DS/Wii, or just buy a router, the best choice.

Since this is a more general question, I'm moving this to the Video Games forum. It's not really a question that has anything to do with HGSS...

Your best bet would be to look at each system's respective Bulbapedia article. Original DS. DS Lite. DSi. In my opinion your best bet would be the DS Lite. The extra features on the DSi aren't really worth the hefty price tag, and the original is too bulky.

DSi, Just in case they release pokemon DSiware and because it's slimmer
But don't buy the XL because it's huge and hard to carry (I don't have one and haven't seen one, but from the specs that description seems right)

If you are not going to use Pal Park: DSi or DSi XL are the better options, they are more adanced consoles and haves exclusive games for it together with the DS ones.
Now the only thing you need to worry about is the size and color you would like.

DSi LL is the best if don't care if it larger, DSi if not. DSl if you want Pal Park or just a cheap device.

If you want to be able to play GBA games on it (possibly e.g. buy a Gen III game and Pal Park Pokémon afterwards), or import games of different regions (old DSes do not have a region restriction, but I remember there was something like that in DSi, I'd say go for Lite. I personally despise DSi because a console shouldn't go through three vaguely different designs, but it has its little advantages.

The DSi works fine with Japanese games, just ask my copy of Jump Ultimate Stars. It is region coded in that you can only download games from the American server, but that's a given.

"To clarify, only software that is created specifically for the DSi will be region locked. This will include both download and cartridge-based games. Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance games, however, will continue to be region-free.

DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region. Also because we are including parental control functionality for Nintendo DSi and each region has its unique age limit made by different independent."

It's not the design only, the software is better also...

I think you should search for video reviews of each edition and comparatives in a video sharing website like YouTube, this is going to help you to decide which one is the best for you. ^^

Get the DS Lite or DSi, don't bother with DSi XL.

P.S. Hope they don't make future Pokemon games only for the DSi <_<'

Well, because, the DSi XL is aimed towards elder people and it's probably gonna be more expensive then the DSi.

I'm sure they won't, but there are some games (not related to Pokémon) in DSiWare that you may like.
I don't really care that much at all about the DSi, I just hope that future Pokemon (hand held games) will also be for the DS and not just exclusively for the DSi.

DS Lite. It has pal park, plays GBA, and can play the same ds games a dsi can.

Wow this is tough. You all really know your stuff and I just saw some youtube comparison vids and I'm still not completely sure.

The DSi XL is huge and expensive but I'd probably keep it at home and not take it out often, so weight isn't really an issue. If I'm going to buy a console maybe I should get the most up-to-date version? (money isn't really an issue for me)

DS Lite is older, cheaper and I have the choice to play Generation III Games (ROMS I once tried were fun).

But since HG/SS have the majority of the Pokemon that were once only available in Generation III games, they aren't really essential anymore (e.g. Mewtwo, a Hoenn starter, a Kanto starter, Rayquaza, Groudon or Kyogre).

DSi has software improvements over DS Lite but DSi XL seems to have the best improvements so far.

DSi XL has huge screens which I like and up-to-date software so I'm guessing it's faster than the previous versions. But I also hear that battery life isn't so great; though being so big I guess that would be obvious.

But I've heard some people say there's no difference in resolution and the DSi XL is "blockier"? Also the pen thing for DSi XL is huge and hard to hold.

I don't plan on buying any other games except Pokemon SS.

I only plan on buying a Region 1 version so whether the console I end up getting is region locked or not doesn't really matter to me.

Another question is, will the Generation V games be for an entirely new console or will it be compatible for DSi XL, DSi and DS Lite or just DSi XL and DSi?

I guess I'm leaning towards the DSi at this moment since it's more advanced than DS Lite but doesn't have the cons that DSi XL has.

if you think you may ever want to get a Gen III game then you should get the DS lite but if you want to be able to surf the web on your DS then the DSi is the way to go.

Do both DS Lite and DSi have the wi-fi thing?

I definitely want to battle other people and possibly trade Pokemon.

Yeah, my definition of design includes the software and hardware features :> And for the region lock thing, I didn't remember to what extent it was, so I didn't put it as a sure statement :p Thanks for looking it up.

There's a catch: you should not play ROMs (nor talk about them here), using them is piracy and it's a loss of income to all the developers. But that's right, the second generation remakes bring the rest of the Pokémon missing in DPPt back to be easily accessible.

As for Gen V, nothing's set in the stone yet, but I think they have specifically been talking about a "DS game", which suggests that they're compatible with all DS series consoles.

Yes, both have Wi-Fi, and gen 5 will be on DS, I doubt it will be DSi only, but if I were you, I would get a DSi, since it's not as big as the DSi LL and more up to date than DSl and you said money isn't a issue.

Ok well then I guess I'm going with a DSi.

Slightly better than DS Lite but cheaper than DSi XL.

Having SS eliminates the need to have Generation III games so it doesn't bother me that DSi can't play them.
No Pal Park for me.

Thanks for all the help and advice everybody. :unworthy:

It's like the size of the original DS, and those weren't fun to carry.
