I heard about this new version of the Nintendo DS about six months ago... AND NOW IT'S ABOUT TO BE RELEASED INTERNATIONALLY!!! YAY :)
Any opinions about this new successor?
imho, I believe the DSi has a subtle purpose of competing with products such as Apple's iPod Touch.
Think about it:
-Music playback; even suuports AAC files. The speakers and audio are also enhanced
-DSi Apps which are bought off of the DSi Online Store (compare to iTouch apps and iTunes Store)
-Free Opera Browser (I hear it's an improvement of the Wii's Browser)
-New Wii-based user interface!
-Integrated Photo Channel
- Not one, but TWO cameras.

Give the DSi some time, and eventually people will be thinking, hmmm looks like iTouch has some company...

I thought we had another topic, but I guess it got pushed under in the overgrowth.

DSi? Meh, M.E.H... meh. I'd probably feel more enthusiastic about it if it were an actual new system and not a remake system.

It is neat that they are giving US and Europe a new color... but I'm going to still wait for the chance of a Dragon Quest special edition or something and import that (if I get it)

I like the ideas in it, I just don't like that they took out the gameboy slot.

I agree, I really dont think they should've taken out the GBA Slot, its gonna drive some customers away from buying it....speaking of which, being released at $299, I'm not rushing to get it.

Don't get me wrong though, I do want this, I've been wanting a Nintendo camera since I missed out on the Gameboy one. And the DSiWare might produce some cool stuff like possibly a Pokemon Ranch for the DSi and hopefully releasing Classic Gameboy games in a VC type situation. And plus with the new SD card functionality, it'll make some certain businesses much more easy *cough*, provided they can get through the firmware (or whatever it is).

But yeah, too expensive still.

Actually it's only $170... Where did you get $299!? O:

And I'm kinda mad that America's not getting white... I wanted a white one because my Lite is black...

somewhere I found a japanese one for £9000 that was extreme, but it may have been a misprint. Uk is getting white and black as far as I know.

cool that one camera is 3mp and other is 0.3mp

I know $299 the Aussie price in Australian dollars (AUD). I don't know the other countries prices. Though I know that's the price in Australia.

I won't be rushing out very soon to buy it. It needs to do alot more than it's doing now to convince me it's worth it.

Okay, WHY does anyone need the DSi? What's the point of it?

WPA/WPA2 support on wireless and better wireless, which is good for many people as WEP encryption on a wirless network is not a great way of securing it and instead of having to change your network to that security, you can keep the WPA/WPA2 encryption and be safer.

Slightly bigger screen - both touchscreens - be good for newer games in future

Music playback and enhanced sound

you won't accidently turn of the DS when looking for the volume button as the sound button is in a place that you can't accidently turn it off

Anyway, the cheapest one I sw in UK was £150 at the moment.

I don't need all that. And how do they expect me to play Pokemon like that, exactly?

The only good thing coming out of this is a possible lowering of DS Lite prices. My DS touchscreen is failing hard, I could use a new one.

I don't need my DS at all. I just like it because it plays Castlevania, Metroid, Etrian Odyssey, and Disgaea. Totally unnecessary.

Even so, I doubt I'll guess one unless an exclusive game I really want comes out for it. Bigger screens, better speakers, and a reset button are definite pluses, though (I hate having to go through the DS menu and all the credits when I reset a game).

You can softreset... L+R+Start+Select.

Like me!
I already have an iPod touch so this is also kind of not as important anyway.

The reason they did was that they wanted to get people away from the older GBA games and would only two or a few games that use the GBA slot on a DS... Guitar hero and Pokemon come to mind, make them not take away the slot when there are loads more games that don't use it at all?

Literal much?

Anyway I have ordered a DSi. I want it, and while I still intend to use my Lite to play GBA games, there's a nasty buildup of dust in the lower-right of the top screen, so I'd like to upgrade.

I'm not so much hyped for camera, though. I'm mostly interested in the increased screen size and new operating system.

...that is if your buttons still work. My shoulder's functionality are in and out and currently, my R shoulder is shot. They find ways to come back, but at almost all times, they never work when I want them too.

If this continues to remain a problem, the DSi may be a nice upgrade. Also SDHC and WPA usage. Yum.

I think with the DSi Nintendo are once again aiming for the casual, "look it's a sleek cool gadget!" market. Why would anyone in that market want to play crusty old GBA games when there are brand new DS games about? But, of course, for the traditional gamer that is a huge downside.

I don't think that the lack of a GBA slot will hurt sales at all.
