Nintendo Events - how do they work?

First of all, apologies if this is in the wrong place, I'm not sure what the protocol for asking questions is here.

I've heard bits and pieces about nintendo events, but I've never actually been to one. Are they conventions? Roadshows? Is it something that happens at gamestores? Is it a ticketed thing?

The main reason I ask is because I was wondering if, with the release of HG/SS coming up in the UK, whether it would be likely that I'd be able to legitimately get hold of a Celebi ... but of course, having never been to one of these events I have no idea how feasible this is

Any help is greatly appreciated

Most of the events take place at a gamestore. You just go there and talk to the people who are responsible for this specific event. Then, you turn on the power of your DS and download the data into your game. You must have unlocked the ''Mystery Gift'' function before you download the wonder card though. There are usually large posters advertising this event, which also tell you how to use it.

Basically what Commander said.
Some stores are gamestop and toysRus, if you have any of those near your area.

A lot of the more recent events are online, though, so you just need to find a wi-fi spot and connect to the event server during specific time periods.

Hmm, interesting, thanks for you help everyone. There is a ToysRus about two miles from here ... I could easily travel to Birmingham if need be though, I suppose. Would I need a Nintendo dongle to connect to an online server or would any wireless dongle do?

For the events at TRU or gamestop, all you need is mystery gift and that's about it. No online servers needed.

You go to a shop (GAME, Toys R us, ect), and use Mystery Gift.

And if you're like me, you stay until closing time so you can have the life-size cardboard cutouts...

You don't have to activate Mystery Gift to get a Nintendo Event at a place like TRU or GameStop, in my experience.

I thought Toy'sRus only hosted pokemon events in the USA? At least they don't do so in Spain.

Depends on the country, I guess. They're hosted by Gamestop here in Norway.
