Purple?

Methinks they're just ass-covering all the colors, just in case someone tries to make up one and sell it.

Then again, I did want a Purple and Orange sometime...

...any news on whether there's copyrights on ahem and ahem you know what?

Pokémon Sugimory Edition > Pokémon Gray

Because it's simply a synonym for gra- *strangled*

..On a serious note, Pokémon Scarlet sounds pretty cool. Along with Pokémon Crimson.

Despite them being pretty much the same colour, you're right.

It would confuse the hell out of the kids. :D

What TTE said; they're just covering the bases to stop another Jade/Diamond.

Well, Pokémon Black could pair with White, but as they didn't trademark that one, it could be paired with Brown. But still, I don't think they are the future games' names, as Nintendo seems to have totally forgotten about colors. But it would be great if they get back to that name pattern, as was in the first two generations.
As TTEchidna said, I think they just did that in order to avoid bootlegs with those names.

Why not just trademark "Pokemon Rainbow Butterfly Kitten" while they're at it?

Why not just trademark "Pokemon Rainbow Butterfly Kitten" while they're at it?

Pokemon Lisa Frank Version > Pokemon Rainbow Butterfly Kitten

Purple?

That's what I was thinking too.

With that said, let's all make Pokemon Turquoise, Pokemon Beige, and Pokemon Ultraviolet and Infrared version.

EDIT: Pokemon Visible Light Spectrum!

So we're playing this game again, huh? I guess like everyone else, I assume Scarlet and Crimson as the highest potential names. Unless pokemon gets a spin-off made by the Shin Megami Tensei team and they create pokemon gray and black, recreating the existing pokemon in their (Persona4) Art style, putting it in some kind-of alternate darker dimension...

actually that'd probably be pretty cool!.. (yeah, spin off and make the game kind-of a RPG strategy game)

Scarlet and Crimson would be good names for Gen V games, I agree. They sound good and also go back to Gen I through naming the games for colors.

When were the real game titles trademarked anyway? Didn't we get Diamond, Pearl, and Emerald at the same time, just after FRLG came out, alongside a bunch of others? Someone should see if we can collect those dates.

And did RGBY's trademark run out? TOW says it's "five years without active use", and we all know it's been more than that since Nintendo was actively promoting the games.

Nintendo registers swarm of Pokémon trademarks: Generation I names re-registered

In the Japanese Trademark Database, several previously used Nintendo trademarks have been registered, including Pokémon Red, Green, Blue and Yellow, all of which have already been released. New trademarks recently registered include Pokémon Black, Pokémon Brown, Pokémon White, Pokémon Gray, Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Purple, Pokémon Crimson and Pokémon Scarlet.

...well, shit, my bad for that.

We gotta make there be a switch for editing news articles.

Scarlett and Crimson are the same colors, more or less. It'd be really freaking confusing to have them both.

Sorry, but what's so special or news-worthy about this? o.o
Obviously those just save the rights for the original Red/Green/Blue games ... most likely those are just old, but now renewed tradmarks.
Could've reported this a week ago (after seeing this GoNintendo news I checked the trademark site and found those Pocket Monsters trademarks along with "DSA"-"DSZ" trademarks (yeah, the whole alphabat, this must be breaking news! Nintendo will release 25 more DS updates! Some people on the IRC may remember talking about the trademarks.) which I haven't seen any reports on so far.), but I didn't imagine anyone would care besides giving silly comments about Sugimori ... oh wait, nevermind what I said.

Oh and those are Pocket Monsters trademarks, registered by Nintendo/Creatures/GAME FREAK. But I guess not even people writing Pokémon-specific news will ever get this right ...
And before you remind me that I could correct the article: I'd like to, but then I see this whole claim about everything besides Red, Green, Blue and Yellow being a new trademark. Can this be verified, do we know this really is the case? I have my doubts and I have no idea how to check if it's true, besides trying to find trademarks filed ten years ago. I'll try that today in the evening after I'm back from work...

I put this on the article talk page but wanted to copy it here:

*ポケットモンスター赤 (Red)
*ポケットモンスター朱 (Scarlet 1)
*ポケットモンスター紅 (Crimson)
*ポケットモンスター緋 (Scarlet 2)

I looked these up in a dictionary:

赤; 紅; 朱 【あか】 (n) (1) red; crimson; scarlet; (2) red-containing colour (e.g. brown, pink, orange); (3) (often written as アカ) (col) Red (i.e. communist); (4) (See 赤信号) (abbr) red light; (n) (5) (See 赤字) (abbr) red ink (i.e. in finance or proof-reading); (in) the red; (adj-no,n-pref) (6) (See 赤の他人) complete; total; perfect; obvious

紅 【くれない(P); べに(P); こう】 (n) (1) deep red; crimson; (2) (べに only) rouge; lipstick

朱(P); 緋 【あけ(P); ひ(緋)】 (n) (1) scarlet; red; (2) (See 朱に染まる) blood

It appears that the Scarlet and Crimson entries are merely alternate Kanji spellings for Pokemon Red, which can be translated as Crimson or Scarlet in English. 赤, 朱, and 紅 can all be pronounced "aka", the word for "red".

Update: A friend of mine who actually knows Japanese has told me that the 2nd one could be translated as "Vermillion".

Update 2: 灰 means "ash" and 茶 means "tea". "Grey" and "brown" would be 灰色 and 茶色 ("ash color" and "tea color") respectively.

Perhaps we should have a List of unused Pokémon trademarks article?

`Let me say this. I doubt thse are for new games just to stop bootleggers and i call dibs on the first person to say that this whole trademarking of the original games is for a gameboy virtual console on the ds. If you dont believe me i am also guessing we should get second gen re-trademarking in a week or month.

For the record, I am unhappy with this article and don't think it should have been posted, at least not the way it originally was.

That's true, and I thought about it after the fact, but technically Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum are all the same color too. (But yeah, it's still not completely the same... but for some reason I associate Scarlet with jewels and crimson with fire or metals. Not sure if I have a reason for that though...)
