Heh, Ash would always want a challenge. Choosing the strongest of Noland's Pokemon to battle against is what makes Ash such a competent trainer. He wants a challenge, not a push-over. I don't think he would ever want to battle a weaker Pokemon when there's a much stronger one to prove his worth against.

I wouldn't underestimate the Trapinch either. I know it's an unevolved pokemon, but the anime likes to overpower unevolved pokemon in the spirit of equality. However, I don't remember this being done for anyone but Ash. The Frontier Brains are no dummies. I'm sure that it would be like Hydro Pump heads for Trapinch, Trapinch poofs before it is hit. Trapinch used Faint Attack and hits your Blastoise.

Ash always wants a good challenge, and that's one of the many things I like about him. ^_^
