...but noob knows nothing about web design.

I'm a wannabe game developer, and I'm thinking that it would be nice to have a personal site where I could post all sorts of ideas and brainstorming, screenshots of progress, ramblings, updates, etc related to my current project(s).

I need it to look professional and impressive, so something like Geocities won't do. The problem is that I don't even know any HTML, and am equally clueless in all other web design-related topic. So, I thought someone here could maybe help me out...

First of all: web hosting. Unless one of my projects becomes impressive enough to become a commercial product, I want to stick to free web hosting. I've noticed that you guys have a list of such service providers, but I don't know which of those would serve my needs best. I'd appreciate recommendations very much.

Second: layouts/templates. Stuff like CSS and XHTML are things I haven't heard of until maybe a couple months ago. I've noticed that, in the right hands, they can produce very appealing results... Again, I've found that you guys have compiled a list of sites that has some for download -- and again, I can't really decide which to look at, because of my lack of knowledge in this field. If you could give any advice here, it would be highly appreciated.

I probably have many more questions, but I can't think of those right now.

Thanks in advance.

First of all, for web hosting, there are very good free webhosts out there. You can try them and they are not Geocities content mind you.

I am searching for a talented person to run a Game Development Section in my website http://pokedrome.com . I do not have much skills at this and I sure could use a person like your's help. If you agree, I will give you a prime position at your site and give you independence to do what you like. I can give you access to my site and also teach you HTML and CSS.

If you would like to make a website on your own, then think of what is your aim. If it is going to be 100% proffesional and you'll need like 1GB of more of space, you could go to a paid host like Elixant. They are cheap and stable. Otherwise, you could try a free host and still make your website proffesional. Think Carefully.

My best suggestion would be to take a look at some HTML tutorials and get the basics down. Then go on from there. :)

I appreciate the kind offer, Chrono Cr@cker, but I do not have the skills you seek, nor would I have the time.

What would I use 1GB for? I'm aiming for a site that'll represent my wannabe game dev "company," showcase current works-in-progress, and a place to host a dev log/ideas/blog/whatever. Screenshots, concept art, and possibly sound clips wouldn't need that much space, I don't think. I need to find a layout/template to accommodate that... I think I have much searching to do. :p

Take-kun, I'm hoping that I won't need to learn HTML... If knowledge of it will be required in order to install the template, if/when I find one, perhaps someone will help me out?

dhost is uber slow.

You have to learn HTML to even understand a template. It's quite simple to learn - once you know the basics (which really won't take over a day to learn) you can always look up more advanced coding. Once you get the basic understandings, you can understand a template.

And I'd offer to design you a template, but I have NO graphic skills whatsoever. ^^~

dhost is slow? Oh well, I went with that. :p http://dhost.info/hcat/index.html So yeah, I found myself a template and figured out how to change stuff by messing with the index.html file and looking at results... (I bet there is a tonne of spelling mistakes there -- I didn't bother checking that stuff yet. Looks like it was more simple than I had thought. The next challenge will be to create another page; I'll deal with that tomorrow.

PS. That's a photo of my cat. And no, hCAT doesn't stand for "half a cat." XD

If you're looking to make multiple pages with the same layout, you may want to consider using PHP while the site is still new.

What advantages would PHP give me? Why is it better than, say, making an .html file for each page? How hard would it be to set up PHP to do that?

It's not hard at all - it's a matter of including a small piece of code, and then writing your content to work with it. It's better because if you need to change your layout, you don't have to edit every page separately.

Your site's looking quite good - very clean and fast. Nice template.
