North Korea set you up the bomb

Perhaps South Korea shouldn't provoke North Korea either. I think I remember reading about some kind of annual South Korean military tests that made North Korea feel threatened.

Bush's main screen turn on?

Are we looking at an angle of how Bush would handle this situation? If so, then we are all doomed.

Let's face it, George Bush is no Kennedy and the UN has been skiping stones
around Kim Jong Ill for a while now. While it may not be a Cuban missle crisis,
any Nuclear threat puts the world in hot water and what's worse is that no
one currently has the guts to do anything about it. [But I understand the fear
is in the unpredictability of Kim's behavior; enough to put anyone at bay.]

Wow, North Korea has nuclear weapons? Who would've guessed? What with them telling us repeatedly?

What were we doing when that happened? Oh right, looking for those things in Iraq. Obviously, Kim stole them from Saddam.

I think the best thing is to not be rash about any decisions concerning nuclear weapons...

But I don't think that most people believe that to be the way to go.

And to think the bastard who made this possible was pardoned by Pakistan's military dictator.

If the Cold War taught us anything, it is that nuclear arsenals deter the use of nuclear weapons. Nuclear winter would benefit nobody, particularly in the long term (though in the long term, we're all dead anyway). It will need a new generation of Game Theorists to tackle, but I do not expect the end of the world anytime soon. I propose the beginning of a new game of cat and mouse between America and a Communist dictatorship. It will all be fine unless the North Koreans are bonkers... oh shit.

You know what though? I'm a liberal, but I have to look at this from a cynical perspective. North Korea has anywhere from 2 to 5 nukes, let's say. We have about 20,000 nukes. Russia has an additional 10,000 or so, with other allies having less. So we invade North Korea. They use one nuke. We use one thousand nukes.

Game, set, match.

But seriously, I think this is pretty overhyped, although China may decide it's time to stop funding nutcases south of the border and make NK fold...

(This post has been cross-posted among multiple forums)

I think it's time the international community further isolate this country by severing all diplomatic ties, shutting down every North Korean embassy out there, getting the small international community in North Korea to pull out of there, and to literally seal North Korea off from the outside world through all means, in order to send a very strong message to their government. This even if this means starving their (innocent) citizens to death; in fact, this might drive even more North Koreans out of their country and isolate North Korea even further.

However, any calls for military action should be considered carefully. You are now dealing with a country that can create a nuclear winter if you wage war with them. Moreover, military action can only serve to be a stepping stone to World War III, considering all the messiness we already have in other parts of the world. Governments must not react in a knee-jerk manner and carefully consider every possibility, including, in this case, total world war and it's scary consequences (think: end of the world). In my opinion, peaceful but strong, immediate, real, and frim actions must be taken against North Korea now in order for any progress to happen. Going to war will only make matters worse. Much, much worse.

Japan must also not use this as an excuse to go into militarism. I often regard Japan's move to a true pacifist country at the end of World War II (even if it was unfairly forced by the U.S.) as the right move, and a move every country should work towards. Going into militarism will be a great leap backwards for Japan, and will not help at all in mantaining the already-troubled "peace" of the world. In fact, hearing all the reports that a new arms race may be sparked off, Japan will only help it by going into militarism.

Edit:
If Abe doesn't use this as an excuse to get the constitution of Japan ammended to allow them the use of war and pre-emptive strikes, he's an absolute fool.

I very strongly disagree with that. My reasons has already been explained in this post.

I don't believe that Archaic is condoning such an action (neither am I) but pointing out that it is an excellent opportunity for Abe to pursue his goals.

I can see where you are coming from. Before this mess happened, I always thought it was ironic that a nuclear superpower that can unleash God-knows-what-kind-of-death-and-destruction with nuclear bombs is calling for one country to stop making nuclear bombs; the U.S., along with other nuclear powers, should show that nuclear weapons are not the way to North Korea by doing it themselves - disarming themselves of nuclear weapons.

However, I think that's now too late. A sorely missed opportunity for everyone, I must say.

Either that or Japan begins its own nuclear program, and at that point everything goes to hell because the last thing China and South Korea want besides a nuke-happy N. Korea is a nuke-happy Japan.

That would be a major turnaround, not to mention draw lots of protests from Nagasaki and Hiroshima...

I'm so ronry.
CONGRATULATIONS! You just won the internet! xD That was fucking hilarious.

Meh, this probably won't lead to anything unless Bush provokes Kim Jong Ill.

Not to mention lots of protests (and protesters) TO Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Something tell me you'd have world-records-setting protests in those two towns, or very close.

Wow...North Korea's a threat. Wish I'd said that three years ago...oh, wait, I did.

I'm so sick of this crap. We've talked and talked and talked with the North Koreans. Time for talking is over. As much as I hate the idea of risking the hundreds of thousands of innocent North Korean lives, we can't just sit by anymore. Kim Jong Il is a spoiled brat. He needs to be taught a lesson. Sanctions will only hurt the people on the street. As is, food given to the country by the UN (to be handed out to be needy) is sold on the street. People are dying in the streets. There's at least one concentration camp holding thousands ("between 50,000 and 200,000") of "political dissidents." It sickens me that it's going to take an act of nuclear aggression for the world to get off its collective ass and do something. There were fewer reasons to go into Iraq. There are fewer reasons to go into Iran. Nothing's changed in the past few years. Something else I'm tempted to throw in, but people will get all up in arms if I use that magical word, even just as emphasis.

Japan should militarize. They seem to at least see the threat.

Because attacking an unstable dictator who is KNOWN to have nuclear weapons is a bright idea, Grn.

Listen, I'm just sick and tired of this bullshit. Yeah, they have nukes. Yeah, going in there isn't the smartest thing. But sitting here and doing nothing is even worse at this point. We've TRIED talking. I was all for talking. Didn't work. Now we up the ante. Doesn't mean we have to go in, just increase the number of soldiers on the border. Move ships into the surrounding waters. C'mon, it's how America started Vietnam. We can do it again.
