Subject: Linking to streaming/downloadable episodes (VERY IMPORTANT)

Hey all,

Recently, we've noticed that a number of users have been providing links to sites that allow people to watch full episodes of the anime. This is quite illegal and has the potential to get this website in some serious trouble, so a decision has been made to start cracking down on this type of behavior.

Effective immediately, the following rules will be put into place:

  • Anyone who posts a link to streaming episodes (i.e. episodes on YouTube, DailyMotion, etc.) will receive three infraction points.
  • Anyone who posts a link to a website that has downloadable episodes (i.e. MegaUpload, any site with Bittorrents, etc.) will receive five infraction points as a warning. Subsequent violators will receive a short-term ban regardless of how many infraction points he or she has accumulated up to that point.
  • Anyone providing instructions for illegal downloading/streaming without providing a link (i.e. "go to YouTube and search for user blablabla...he has the episodes you want) gets three infraction points. Subsequent violations get five infraction points.
  • A user asking where to watch an episode gets a warning. Cartoon Network reruns the show fairly regularly, so if someone misses the premier of a new dub episode, check the network's website to find out when it's airing next. As far as the Japanese version goes, you guys can go to sites like CD Japan and Yes Asia and purchase the DVDs that are available. As for the rest of the series that hasn't been released on DVD...you're on your own.

This obviously does not apply to Toonami Jetstream (which has legal streaming episodes), preview clips on the TV-Tokyo/official movie websites, or anything else that's shown through an official site.

Basically, what it all boils down to is that any discussion of streaming and/or downloading needs to be kept off Bulbagarden. If you do decide to download episodes of the show or whatever, then we can't stop you - just confine stuff like that through e-mail or IM.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Please post any questions or comments regarding this announcement in this thread.

Does this mean that those people cannot PM links, hints, and such? Since you said e-mail/IM

So I assume this means no plans for an embeddable video option.

Is this all YouTube/Megaupload links, or just Pokemon ones?

All. Yes, that includes series not licensed for English release.

Of course, if the company themselves has put it up for free distribution (as a small number of companies like GONZO are currently experimenting with on Youtube and Crunchyroll), that's fair game.

I have some blog entries I made around Halloween that have (non anime) YouTube links in them (a reading of The Raven, Thriller, a 30 Rock clip). So, do those have to go down? Or just anime?

I assume that if it's a YouTube link to something original it's alright. Am I correct?

Also, how does this affect (for instance) links to AMVs etc.?

FUNimation recently put a number of animes themselves up on Youtube. Entire seasons of them, and in one case, two seasons. This was announced on their website and their podcasts that they were doing it.

I posted a video of the pentominium in friend or foe and someone said.

Foe (is probably one of the exceptions)

are non pokemon or anime (real life videos, like what I posted which talks about the pentominium) banned too?

Please read this thread more carefully:

Clips are okay. FULL EPISODES is what is forbidden.

If what you're linking to ISN'T a full episode (or, say, "Episode 325 Part 4 of 5" type thing), you don't have to worry.

Why has this come about? Did FUNi contact the site about this?

Are you sure YouTube links are illegal? If they were illegal wouldn't YouTube/Google take the videos off their website?

I isn't even an episode at all, it's only a video of a next tallest building.

Shogakukan gets videos taken off of YouTube all the time. They obviously don't want them up there.

Videos of full episodes that haven't been taken down yet aren't any less illegal than the ones that have been taken down. The people at YouTube just haven't gotten around to taking them off yet. With the sheer volume of videos the staff there have to moderate, it's unreasonable to expect them to be able to pounce on every single violation the very second it's posted.

We're not asking you to agree with the way the companies think or anything. We just want you to be aware that openly discussing such matters in a public forum such as this one isn't really that great of an idea (not to mention rarely ever on-topic).

Then what in the world are you worrying about?

Of course, because we all know that there are no full episodes in existence that are legit. /sarcasm

No, it was all 90% of the staff (with me being the only one against half of this (the youtube part) when it became final).

Yes, YouTube/Google does take videos off their site when they are asked to take them down. Also, as has been mentioned, anime studios (US, JPN, and other countries as well probably) have legal full episodes up on youtube and veoh as well. Those are totally okay to link to. As are full movies on youtube put up by hollywood studios (coming to a video streaming site near you in the next few months possibly). http://news.cnet.com/feature-films-coming-to-youtube/

I will still say that I can understand downloading links, torrent links, but I think that infraction points for linking to streaming video of episodes (that this site can not get in any trouble for) is pretty lame considering that a trigger-finger mod on a bad day could just infract someone before looking to make sure it was actually a legit episode put up by a legit company. Innocent people are going to be hurt by this... I can feel it now.
