This is pretty much a thread for discussing the different things that the NPCs say. That includes anything from the guy who hints at Hoenn to the Youngsters that love shorts. It doesn't include plot related stuff, because there's already a thread for that.

An interesting bit of dialogue that I noticed is said by a guy in Restaurant Le Nah in Lumiose. Two dudes are eating at the same table and one says something like: "So we're having a meal together as men. Nothing wrong with that." I just thought it was kinda funny that he'd even mention it. The other guys says something about how they're both good looking. I wonder if something's going on between them...

I'm PLEASANTLY surprised at the level of NPC dialogue this time around, since it's a worldwide release and they were working off the same script more or less, I feared the translation would be incredibly stilted, and none of the early screenshots alleviated this fear...but no, it's actually pretty good.

Way, way, way improved over the absolutely horrid stylings of Black and White/Black 2 and White 2, where everyone talked like a robot. Gen IV had a great translation, even with all the goofy meme nods (which are back it seems), and I'd gladly take those few *wink* *wink* *am I cool yet?* jokes over the mess of Gen V.

I remember in Gian's playthrough someone said something along the lines of "Don't sneak up on me like that or I might fall in love with you!" P.S. it was a male character, Gian is a male in his playthrough.

Not sure if this dialog is this way in english, but in spanish it's something like this:

"How do you prefer it, long or short?"

answer "Long": "Of course, the longer, the better"
answer "Short": "So better if shorter, eh!, Clearly you know what are you talking about"
answer "Huh?": "Of course I was talking about focal distance" (photography stuff)

Yeah it is in the english version as well.

So I wasn't paying much attention to the Youngster on route 5 during the battle so he greets you with "Do you know why I wear shorts?" I quickly beat him, only half paying attention to the game so as I read his next bit of dialogue of "The are comy and easy to wear." I just started laughing, as in had to stop playing for a moment in order to stop laughing. I am not quite sure why I found the funny but I feel ashamed for laughing at that old joke.

I am adoring the NPC dialogue in these games; some of it's just so wacky and out there that I've actually laughed out loud reading them.

Of course, as soon as I saw that line, I immediately thought of the third quote in this song by Smooth McGroove featuring Dookieshed:

There is a youngster named Joey in Santalune forest. Sans-Rattatta, though. :(

I swear they are pulling out all the stops when it comes to shipping, though. More so than usual, it seems like every other cutscene is intentionally fueling some sort of shipping.

Really? The only ship cutscene I've had was the fireworks with Shauntal one.

Meh, maybe I read into things too much. 'Every other' was a severe exaggeration, though, too.

A lady in the Lumoise city was talking about Blue. She said, "He got "bonjour" down just fine, but he still always said smell ya later when he left."

I thought it was a pretty good reference to how blue said bonjour to Red on the SS Anne.

The NPC dialogue is SO GOOD in this game, and it has a much funnier feel. It feels more natural and I'm just loving every minute of it.

It also seems like there are way more double entendres in X & Y compared to previous main series games, and it didn't seem to bother the translators that some of them could even be interpreted as homoerotic in nature--the "don't sneak up on me" dialogue that someone mentioned earlier is a good example of that. I also seem to remember a Garçon in one of Lumiose's alleyways saying something that I thought was somewhat homoerotic; he said something like, if two people stare in each other's eyes for too long, would start to feel passion inside of them--and then he asked the player character if they wanted to create a scene like that. I just remember reading his dialogues and thinking, "What the WHAT?!"

Good stuff, y'all.

A huge amount of these are definitely making me smile. I really hope someone makes sort of a collection to scroll through sometime :) I'm in Reflection Cave right now, and the one guy who just screams "BATTLE!" when he challenges you, "DESPAIR!" when he loses, and "TRAIN!" if you talk to him afterward... I don't know why it felt so funny, but it did.

I also really like that the "shipping" tension is there with the same characters no matter your gender. I was half expecting Shauna to ask me on a date!

NPC dialogue was hilarious.

My favorite one is in the ritzy hotel in Luminose city, at the 3rd or 4th floor there's a lady with a froufrou.

She says something along the lines of "What's that smell? Oh no Froufrou! Don't mark your territory in a place like this!"

So does this mean everyone in Kalos is technically speaking French?

I think there's a typo in one of the cafes in Lumiose...a lady who telly you bout boutiques. After exiting the conversation, she says "If there's anything else you don't want to know about boutiques, let me know!"

there's a man in Lumiose City that's says he goes around and empties out all the trash cans in Kalos. I think this is a clever way of GF saying there's nothing in them. (of course I haven't checked all the trash bins, so I don't know if this is true.)

"Know how your hair sticks out all over the place when you wake up? Think Mega Evolution is like that?"

Guess that's one way to explain all the wavy ribbons.
