The world, to the average person, seems unchanging. Nothing beyond the general natural processes seem to hold anyone's interest for very long. Life goes on as per the norm.

That was not the reality that some individuals lived in; life for them was infinitely more unpredictable. No one knew when the rifts began opening, or what they led to. However, wherever they appeared, destruction was imminent. These strange occurrences, happening in areas of varying sizes, brought with them strange beings - defined only as monsters, they stalked the rifts in search of something. Though these frightening creatures roamed, they incited no panic in the general populace.

Well, that was because they couldn't be seen. To a normal person, these rifts were non-existent; all things within them simply did not happen. However, to those born with the ability to interact with these rifts, they were very real and very volatile. These beasts would attack those trapped in the rift, and death would usually follow. Usually.

See, most of those stuck in the rift found themselves sitting ducks. Some, however, found it in them to harness their gift. These people awakened themselves to abilities mysteriously granted to them, and used it to fight for their lives. Those who were aware, gifted or not, researched these events. The studied understood how these events worked in its most rudimentary form, others even more than that. One thing was for certain, however.

The beasts wanted to leave the rift - they wanted to be outside. To do this, they targeted the areas of the rifts with the most collections of energy: the nexus. By taking out the nexus, the rifts would open entirely, and destruction would ensue.

___________________________

This is NULL. It takes place in our world, albeit quite loosely.

This world has been plagued by an unseen force called Rifts, which manifest in many areas over a large distance. Outside of the Rift, nothing is amiss. However, on the inside, there are creatures stalking the land within, searching. With them, there are those with the ability to walk the rift - aptly called Riftwalkers. Many of them are unaware of their abilities, but some choose to ally themselves with researchers to prevent cataclysm from occurring.

The Null coalition is the latter, who organize Riftwalkers to investigate rift activity and other things related to it.

Rules
  1. BMGf rules always apply.
  2. No godmodding, tennising, bunnying, or metagaming.
  3. Do not attempt to overlap a character's abilities.
  4. If your sign-up is blatantly horrible, you will be rejected. Otherwise, you will simply be asked to edit it.
  5. The GM's word is law, and the Moderator's law is even higher. If one of these two tell you to do something, please don't make a fuss.

Basic Riftwalker Abilities
- Moderately enhanced physical strength, speed, agility and durability.
- Unique abilities granted by rifts ("Ability" section).

Banned Abilities
  • Invincibility, invulnerability, or transcendence.
  • Perfect illusions.
  • Time, space, and matter destruction.
  • Power-sapping and copying.
  • Power creation/granting.

Trivia (Optional Reading)
  • What happens to others when a Riftwalker enters the rift?
They will be, in simple terms, rendered invisible, intangible and unheard by any without the abilities. You could be walking with your friends and suddenly disappear. In conjunction with this, the Riftwalker is unable to see anyone not in tune with the rift.
  • What is it like inside of the rift?
It's your normal landscape, but the sky turns a different color. Any property damage done inside of the rift will not happen in the real world, so long as the nexus isn't destroyed.
  • Is there always a nexus?
No. Naturally created rifts don't have a nexus. Artificial rifts require a nexus.

Personality: (Optional if you just want to let it show during the RP.)

Ability: (Your ability. Make sure that you are not using any ability shown in the banned section.)
Skills: (What skills does your character have beyond their abilities.)

Background: (Optional)

Name: Ayana "Aya" Nascire
Sex: Female
Age: 22
Orientation: Open

Appearance: Ayana has black hair that goes down to her shoulders, and stands at around 5'8" in height. Her body is slender, but toned from constant training. In general, she wears clothing with some type of insignia on it - whether it be a brand or obscure drawing.

Personality: She is typically calm, amicable if not a bit standoffish at times. She is quite evidently caring of others, and is willing to play mentor to those whom are less experienced than her with the rift. Her sense of justice goes two ways; she takes great pleasure in retribution against those who have it coming, but does not help when those being harmed have no will to help themselves. The team unit is important to her, and though she may want to act alone, she will always acknowledge the advantage that being together offers.

Ability: Ayana harnesses magnetism to a rather honed extent. She uses this ability to lift and control objects with a magnetic field, as well as bend and shape them. Alongside this, she is capable of attracting and repelling things with magnetic force. Her ability causes a toll on her as she continues to use it, and is only useful in proportion to the magnetic fields around her. Her attract/repel ability is able to create its own field, but only for a second to change an object's vector.

Skills: Her skills in CQC are formidable, having extensive martial arts training. Outside of combat, she is an avid collector of "specialized goods" as she calls them, and enjoys tinkering around with technology.

Background: To be revealed in RP.

Reserve, please? This roleplay seems quite interesting.

Name: Falk Freebird
Sex: Male
Age: 17
Orientation: Bi

Appearance: Falk is a tall, but somewhat slender man. He's got a decent amount of muscle on his body, and since his first adventure in the rift, he's been training. Falk himself is fair skinned, with a mop of golden blond hair stop his head. He has a pair of big blue eyes. He has his ears pierced, and has quite the collection of jewelry.
45fd23d64f7b7772c91f6617dfc8fba655fa1940.jpg
Personality: He's a pretty nice guy. Not very confrontational. Likes The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, tabletop RPGs, Oprah, and Harry Potter. He makes a little bit of cash from helping the family business. He saves a lot of it for college. The rest, he usually spends buying paint and those little woodcraft kits you can buy at hobby stores. Falk really likes to build them. He also plays video games, and is a bit of a Sony fanboy. He has a capture card, and uses it to make Let's Play videos. Wants to be an ecologist because it will be a job where he can go outside a lot.

Ability: After escaping from the first Rift he was in, Falk has grown a mouth on his torso. Falk can store objects in it, and then project them from any point on his body. For example, if he used it to eat five knives, he could give himself Freddy Kreuger claws, or just shoot them. If he ate a gun, he could fire it from his hand until he ran out of ammo. The mouth can stretch enough to eat a motorcycle, but it was a bit uncomfortable and Falk felt a little pukey after.
Skills: Falk knows a thing or two about natural science, though mostly as a hobbyist. He has a learner's permit and a crappy car that he bought from an acquaintance and might have been stolen. He has a lot of costumes, though mostly of the Halloween variety.

Background: Lives with his grandparents. They run a Czech restaurant he helps at. Accudentally stumbled into a rift and survived by hiding in a dumpster. After showering, he discovered he had a mouth on his torso.

Can I make a characther that come from the rift?

Name: Robert Streets
Age: 21
Gender:Male
Orientation: Heterosexual

Appearance: Robert is 5'7, has short, black straight hair, green eyes, tanned skin, and has a tattoo of a panther on his arm.
He wears a leather jacket, black pants, and a black shirt, as well as VERY expensive shoes.

Personality: Robert pretends to be rude and/or disinterested, and is known for being capable of going on tirades at the slightest things. However, he is actually a very caring individual who loves the ladies.

Ability: He has the ability to understand any language as soon as he either sees or hears it. This includes secret codes, programming language, sign language, and bird calls.
Skills: He's a passable dancer, and is capable of business negotiations.

Background: Robert, also known as "The Bad Boy", was created in a lab in an unknown lab, along with "The Shy One", "The Heartthrob", and "The Brotherly One", and "The Cutie", in an effort to create the next boy band. When he was being raised, he was only taught the essential things, such as how to dance mediocrely and create tunes that will NEVER LEAVE YOUR F****** HEAD.

For further polishing, he and his brothers were exposed to a rift. However, due to an abnormality he was the only one to obtain superpowers.

....Yeah, this is probably my weirdest idea in a while.

I going to venture and say that you created this character as a joke, which isn't so much a problem as it is a flag-raiser for me. I'm not trying to make the story super-strict and "serious".

Be that as it may, your abilities and background are the problem areas. Your ability will prove to be too powerful in a world like this at some point, so if you're going to make yourself a technomantic code-breaker, give it some good limitations. Your background was passable until the last sentences; one, format that so that it actually reads normally, as it's not a trend that I want to see with sign-ups (i.e: take out those caps and actually tell us what your background is), and two - the rift does not have a "failure rate". Anyone who is able to go into the rift will always gain abilities by them, they just may not be able to train them.

So, correct those and I will review it again. Leave the jokes for meta.

@Yun;

hey yun, can I see your character so I know what I want to do? (Kinda wanna see what the character should be like so I don't get it wrong (inspiration and I want to see an example hope it's no problem) :)

Ah, I have a few questions. Where does the story take place in the world? Also, what happens if my dude just goes out into the street and uses his power where anyone can see it? Also, do you get abilities only from going into the rift once, or can someone get more from going through a lot of them?

It takes place somewhere. It's loosely based on the world, and the setting isn't important.

He can't use his abilities to any huge degree while outside of the rift. Nix that, we'll just make it so that you'll bring too much attention to yourself.

You only get abilities once, but you can definitely evolve them.

If the characters have enhance strengh, iq and speed doesn't that mean they are basically meta humans?

@DJ Omega; No problem.
@theacegamer; The rift doesn't give you enhanced IQ. It gives you enhanced physical performance and durability so that you don't get one-shotted by an errant claw.
