Obama wants longer school hours

I'm all for longer school hours and longer school years. Preferrably I'd like only 1.5 months off of summer vacation instead of the 3 right now in college. -.-

Well Obama can go fuck himself.

Sure it might do some good for the kids, but than again there might be even more drop outs, and the teachers will have little to no time to have a life. This is ridiculous. When I went to school in Europe we had a little over 3 hours but it was hard. American's just don't know how to teach their kids imo. My English teacher would rather flirt then to teach, same goes for other teachers, quite disgusting.

Honestly, if this is what it takes to start improving our US Public School System, it might be worth a try.

Some teachers in the United States actually DO know how to teach. I never had a teacher who was more interested in flirting than in teaching, but then again I had a lot of older teachers who had been teaching since the 70's, so their teaching values might have come from a better time in the US education system...

QFT

I'm in all advanced classes, and the most school-related thing we talk about is... Firecrackers? Just more time to blow off homework for me and my school.

It is nice that he has the schools in mind but... Are there not better Ideas? I agree with Schools being open longer, but The breaks are short as it is, and kids generally do not want to be in school. It would be nice if people would stop bashing these ideas and INSTEAD come up with ways to improve them or a plan that would work better WITHOUT arguements, flaming, and other beligerant things...

Every president is going to have bad ideas. I still plan on supporting Obama unless he bails anymore companies out, or something else stupid. And what is the point of that question?

I think we should compromise of the two obvious opinions.

4 day mandatory school week, longer hours. Friday is open to clubs and sports practices and students able to take extra classes if they want to.

Best Idea I have heard so far. ^_^ Ditto to this.

I think schools should be left as they are. We really don't need longer hours, it will not improve anything. Sure maybe a small percentage, but if you're aiming at a big thing such as the education system, you better come up with a better idea then just "LONGER SCHOOL HOURS FTW." I mean Obama has groups of advisors around him, people who spent years in college and etc, and this is the best they come up with? Damn the education system failed then and now. >_>

You know I am still very skeptical about this, but if they can prove that by extending school hours that we will get better grades and better scores from students. Then lets do it. The US is beginning to lag behind other nations in scores and that will begin to drastically effect the future of this country. Those in school have every right to be angry, but we need to find some solution to the educational system in the US. Then again like I said, I am skeptical if this will do any good beyond just pissing off lots of kids.

Longer hours won't fix the shitty content of the American education system. We'll just get even more shitty content every day.

This won't work. The school day is already too much stress on some kids as it is. add more time to it and grades will fail. I am for taking an hour off the school day, but going to school on Sunday for a half day.

Having longer school hours would be tormenting for kids now, and I will agree that there will probably be more drop-outs.
It's not necessary to lengthen school hours and days because the school hours are fine. It just depends on the student and how willing they are to maintain good grades. It's up to the student. They get a bad grade on a test because they didn't study enough. That's not because of the school schedule. It's because they chose not to study. However, maybe they had something to do the night they were supposed to be studying. Everyone has a different schedule. It all just depends.

OH MY GOD YOU'RE BRILLIANT :O

However, what about sports games? If there are longer hours within school days, then there wouldn't be enough time for homework, studying, projects, sports games, etc. There would have to be a really strict schedule. And nothing can be on the same day, or there wouldn't be proper balance.

Longer? Dude no. You want kids to be asleep faster?

Lengthen the school day if you find something good to put in that can't already fit in over one of the boring-ass things kids have these days. But throwing kids into longer classes that teach the same boring bullcrap and give the same mindless homework... not gonna work.

The president doesn't have the authority to make school days longer. School systems aren't federally controlled, they're controlled by local governments. This is a friendly suggestion by the president at most.

If this works, who wants to be the one to kick my ass into five different ways from December 12, 2012?

Honestly, all this gonna do is get kids more fed up with school and more drop outs. People have never quite gotten this but the more school we have the more testy we are, the more testy the more likely to go like psychopathic killer (see Virginia Tech massacre)

IMO, i'm all for school being extended, IF they nix homework. my life would be made a hell of a lot easier.

As far as this hypothetically happening, I really wouldn't mind because I'm not in the public school system anymore.
