I was thinking of using a bulletin board system where missions will be posted on then decided by you.

Players will choose their mission than try to complete it over the next week or month. A new board with missions will be up monthly and all treasures and items that you all have collected will be tallied. So whatever time period is decided the structure would be-

1. choose mission

2. complete mission

3. prizes, items tallied

4. new mission ( rinse and repeat)
